A couple of your choices of Best Actor performances

The first two that popped in my head :

Gene Hackman in Unforgiven
Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda

Originally I also had Cybill Sheppard for The Last Picture Show but saving her for best actress. I know Kevin Kline only had a supporting role but I put him here because I thought he did an outstanding job for a comedic role. That's not always easy for an actor to do.

Okay, Mark. This thread isn't getting a lot of love, so let's switch now to best actress performances. Sheppard is a good one. Who would be a second one? BTW I also was knocked out by Cloris Leachman's performance in "Picture Show".

I'll throw out 2:

Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity (1944)

Patricia O'Neal in Hud (1963)

I second both of those ! IMO, Patricia O'Neal was/is very underrated. I would be tempted to switch Hud for A Face in the Crowd but I'd be nitpicking. Barbara Stanwyck was outright scary in Double Indemnity. I'll have to think of others in the next couple of days.

Yeah, O'Neal was good in "Crowd" for sure. It was a phenomenal break out role for Andy Griffith.

Nicolas Cage:
Leaving Las Vegas (I think he did win an award for that one)

Sometimes what I think is great other people don't, but I liked Meryl Streep in all these:
One True Thing, 1998
The Hours, 2002
It's Complicated, 2009

I agree re Cage, although I loved him in Raising Arizona (1987).

IMO Streep is the Barbara Stanwyck of the late 20th-dearly 21st Centuries.
I'd prefer if she'd kept her opinions to herself, but she's certainly a great actress.

I really enjoyed Joanne Woodward's performance in Three Faces of Eve (1957), for which she won the Oscar. It was rare, and very believable, for her to portray a vampy, sexy woman in a role.

Jean Smart blew me away in her role as First Lady Martha Logan in the 5th season (2006) of the great 24 series. She showed a range of acting that many in the business probably aspire to. I see she recently won an Emmy for her performance in Hacks (2021-present), but I haven't watched more than the very first episode.
