A Curse on This Modern Technology

This angry individual is more than angry but livid with rage and almost uncontrollable anger at much of the idiotic technology being developed and used today. First I want to curse and anathamize this so called health protection built in when trying to open a plastic bottle paper milk carton, etc. They boast it is the most sanitary way of opening. BULL FEATHERS!. You have to pry it open getting your fingers into the product-you call that sanitary; well if that is sanitary then urinating into my beverage could be classified as sanitary.

Then try to unscrew some of the plastic containers. I have to get a wrench sometimes to open it, or when the metal piece on top of the can breaks when you try to pull it open resulting in my having to use a serrated knife to SAW the can open.

Then we have the replacement of the good old fashioned LIVE operator with automated robots that don't have the sense of a manure pile, causing more problems than you started off with when you were calling. Then on top of that you lose the connection and have to start all over again.

Oh and then there are those robocalls calling you when you are about to sit down to dinner and when you try to disconnect some they won't until the recorded speech is completely played out.. Thank the Lord it shows the caller and if I don't know it i let my operator (my recorded message) deal very effectively with it.

I am over 80 years old and I can truly say "they were the good old days". Life was much simpler then and things were easier to open and when you dialed "0" that good old fashioned live operator would always get you connected to the proper party100 times faster than that moronic robot.

And passwords, oh dear Lord I wish they were never invented. I think I would rather lose a little data then spending hours to create or use one. I get so frustrated with this so called modern technology that i actually put a curse on it and the ones who invented it. I just wish they had to go through the misery we have to go through in trying to use their product.

As you can see I have had a very rough day in using this so called technology and to calm myself down I just had to vet myself upon I know a largely sympathetic audience who experiences the same type of frustration.

You can yearn for the good old days, but they aren't coming back. Some new things are irritating, some are improvements. Remember when to open a can of coffee you used to have to hook a key in a tab and wind all the way around. Now, you just peel back a plastic seal. My Mother had a hand crank can opener, a wringer on her washing machine, and no dryer.

There are tools to help open bottles and cans. Here's one I made for my Mother in Law when she was having trouble with pull tabs.

You just hook the nail under the tab a turn the handle. If you search for pull tab tools you will find several different types.

I don't think bottle tops are any worse than in the past. There are tools for them too. The child proof ones can be tricky. And, I don't really miss telephone operators as I hardly ever needed one. The touch tone phones are quicker and easier to dial than the old rotary type.

Passwords are only necessary if you use the internet, which we didn't have not too many years ago. You could go back to that era if you wanted to. Most browsers will store your passwords, so you only have to enter them once. I have a long list of them for back-up, but I seldom have to refer to it. As far as making one up, just type any old garbage. It doesn't have to make sense.

I have to agree about robo calls. They are a pain. When I get one of them I just lay the receiver down and wait for the phone to go beep beep beep, and then hang up. And, I don't like dealing with a robot voice when I have to call a business. But, they are getting better and eventually you won't be able to tell it's a robot.

What I miss about the old days is the culture. It seems like people trusted each other more, and were more polite in general. But, maybe I'm just being nostalgic.

The packaging is tough. No two ways about it. Made necessary because of theft. The best way to open a plastic protected item is to use a sharp utility knife. Carefully.

Vaccuum packed jars are easily opened if you break the seal. I have an ancient claw grip tool that does that.

The plastic bubble packs are bad. I hate them too. On vacuum packed jars I've found the a regular screwdriver works well to break the seal. I keep one in the kitchen.

I have arthritis in my hands and get VERY frustrated trying to open bottles -- especially the push down and turn ones. I usually have to resort to violence. And don't get my started on that heavy plastic packaging that so many things come in now days -- I shouldn't have to wield an exacto knife to open the plastic surrounding an item. AAARGH! Not to mention that all that plastic and cardboard that ends up in the trash.

About 20 years ago, my daughter tried to open a plastic package by stabbing it with a knife. 2 1/2 hours of microsurgery later, she was left with an index finger that neither straightens out fully nor bends fully.

Be careful of the lethal combination of plastic packaging and sharp kitchen knives.

The university I attended in the latter '60s had a "Department of Packaging Engineering". Little did I realize the evil that was brewing there.

For vacuum sealed jars, my father taught me to hold a butter knife by the blade end and tap around the outside edge of the lid with the handle. This breaks the vacuum seal and (usually) makes it easy to open the jar.

ETA: Thanks for the can opener video, HD! I'll definitely give that a try.
