Def: small concave pieces of wood, shell,ivory, plastic joined in pairs by cord and clicked together by the fingers was an accompliment to Spanish dancing.

This 'pinged' a memory - many moons ago (late 60s I think) my sister was given a pair as a present. Light wood coloured with some sort of motif painted on.
Neither of us could get on with the damn things

The hand held ones were popularized by female Spanish dancers. I've never attempted to ply them.

The ones one a stand with a spring apparatus are used in orchestral music.

We used to use them from grade 2 to grade 6.
They were really fun.

And then there are the "zils", the little brass finger cymbals that originated in Turkey, that the belly-dancers use during their performances. Tink-tink, tink-tink, tink-tink....
