A First: Humans Placed In Suspended Animation

Is this article even for real? Anyone can put anything on the internet.
You are right. There is much on the internet that is not true. Here are links to articles on other sites about the subject. There's a real possibility that it's true. I've long believed that science fiction becomes science fact and have read about instances where this is the case. As modern science and medicine progress, suspended animation being possible does not surprise me.

Certain species including humans possess some capacity to place themselves into suspended animation if certain conditions are met. I'm thinking of mammalian diving reflex where individuals including children have survived immersion into water beyond normal survival times by a dramatic slowing of heartbeat and temporary suspension of respiration. More primitive organisms can also encyst themselves to endure extreme environmental circumstances. Placing humans "into stasis" had long been a standard theme in science fiction, and we may be becoming closer to making that reality...

It may eventually be needed for space travel. Robots man the ship while humans ''rest'' and wake up when on arrival. Science fiction? It will happen.

OneEyedDiva is correct. Medical and NASA research on Stasis is being done.
NASA is, and has been for at least a decade, practicing putting bears in cryogenic stasis in hopes of perfecting it for long term, long distance space travel. They are using bears because they already hibernate in a form of stasis.
They are also using whatever they can learn from Hummingbirds who go into Torpo every night and spend most of each day in Torpo to survive coldest part of winter.
Full cryogenic stasis turns human cells to mush when thawed out. But, the Gentler milder Torpo/Hibernation stasis shows great promise.

Their biggest challenge is that people don't shut off their dreaming in stasis. In stasis they are paralyzed and unable to wake themselves up from a unpleasant or very bad dream. The concern is that when they are awakened at their space travel destination they will be mentally insane. They are trying to learn how to shut down the brain/dreaming so this wont happen.

Don't people in coma run the same risk? They are basically in suspended animation.

It's amazing how life mimics sci-fi, isn't it? Seems that comic artists were the first to envision space suits and flying cars (they're coming) and other futuristic travel.

Good question. Don't know. Maybe in a coma they can still get into and out of dream states because they aren't paralyzed so much that they cant function or move at all. And their brain is more awake/aware then the stasis people. I guess we will just have to ask NASA about this !!:)
