Some are sent bonkers by their neighbour's barking dog or the sound of honking car horns, for others it is the traffic in the sky that is driving them to distraction. Traffic reporting helicopters have long aggravated East Melbourne residents – now fresh complaints are emerging from CBD apartment buildings close to busy helipads on the Yarra River.

Things get tense during major events. Docklands resident Todd Henderson said during the Portsea Polo this year he counted 81 different comings and goings from helicopters near his Docklands apartment, ferrying posh partygoers to the Mornington Peninsula.

"How can this be allowed?" he said. "When I'm on the phone it's impacting on discussions. The neighbours say they can't have their doors open and be watching television."

In response to lobbying from agitated residents, Melbourne City Council will now attempt to create "fly neighbourly agreements" with the city's key helicopter operators, with a hope noise nuisance can be reduced.

In the test of "who was there first", it is the helicopters that come out on top in the CBD – the helipad has been operating from Batman Park since at least 1996.

Hmm... my inlaws live in Melbourne but they don't live there. They are real people. :)

So true, W.. they drive me mad. circling around and around, guess they're looking for car thieves at nearby shopping mall.

We hear them occasionally, maybe twice a year these days, used to be more like twice a month sometimes., but usually they're looking for grow houses. LOL! First few times I heard them, I was practically checking all my doors making sure no once could get in. I was a nervous wreck not knowing what was going on. Not a sound I was used to as they fly quite low. I'm lucky the police never knocked on my door considering all the plants I had on my patio and silly me even once tried to grow catnip, as a insect repellent, but, I found out later it resembles, pot. I won't try doing that again, it didn't grow very much anyway thank goodness. I do think one of my neighbors was getting suspicious of some of my bean plants would grow like weeds.

Sounds like the same complaint I hear from people here who live near airports.

I live near an air force base AND an airport. Military aircraft going over all the time. I'm used to them and usually don't even really hear them, except when one of those big choppers is coming in low -- WHUMP WHUMP WHUMP! As my neighbor says "At least they're OURS!"

Every time, and I mean every time, I hear or see a helicopter I think back to Vietnam....only for a few seconds and then the thought goes away.

I've lived within a few miles of a major airport most of my life. I never minded it... I don't hear the planes.. Military helicopters use my street to fly south to Springfield.. In fact.. one Memorial Day.. A group of about 8 Helicopters flew right past my house.. escorting President Obama From the Airport where Air force one. had landed to a Memorial day ceremony just south of here.

Noise could an issue but I'm wondering if it's more about dancing naked.

Note they say the helicopter was there first what ever that means. Aircraft really shouldn't be that close to a building. Heck there are rules on drones now.

OK, I will review the use of mine to try and make it more neighbor friendly, but I can't guarantee anything...
