Today's flower is a tribute to the first flowering of this big African bulb, Brunsvigia josephinae.
August 28 flowers begin to unfurl:
September 3 flowering well underway:
October 18 emerging new leaves push over the spent flower stalk

I've seen some amazing Dahlias but nothing like the Galactic wonder you just posted, @RadishRose.
And @hollydolly I myself cannot grow hollyhocks, always have been rust magnets for me in our mild summers. But just up the hill at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden I was blown away by these two years ago.
