A humorous look at garage sales

My step mother told us that all her stuff would be our problem when she died.
I still have dad's & her stuff in a storage trailer.
Talk about giving us mess!
It seems up until about 15 years ago, everyone was collecting something. Back when my mom was alive and I helped her when she had a sale, the front yard would look like St. Peter's Square on Easter morning and she could easily make over $300 on a weekend. Now I might get 10 or 12 cars to stop during a sale and then they just browse

The old collectors are dying off and their inheritors don't want their things. The antiques/collectibles market is flooded with items nobody wants. Even more poignant is in most cases of inherited estates, the family just rents a roll-off dumpster and puts everything in it. I shudder to think that every day what was once valuable glassware and china is being treated like garbage, but then, when most people eat out of fast food bags and pizza cartons these days, why would they need a 12-place dinnerware set?

I sold a beautiful Eastlake double bed in perfect condition from 1850 for $260 and it took 6 months. It had been in my family for a long time but I had no room for it.

It seems to me that there’re more charity stores now. People can browse through a variety of items, often for great prices. If I’m in a shopping mood, that’s where I head. It keeps me out of trouble.

It got to be noon and she didn't show, so I called the phone number she gave me. A man answered and said that it indeed was the correct number, but she was out and not expected back until 2 pm. I asked him to have her call me. She actually did and said she was tired from work and her daughter was visiting, so she'd have to make it tomorrow afternoon after she gets out of work, so it would be 3 to 3:30 pm. Let's see.
She did show up and bought the things and didn't haggle. When she was here before, she expressed interest in Christmas items, but when i asked her if she wanted to look, she said she was too tired. She works for a farm that sells plants and it's their busy season. She also has a side hustle painting (not artistic) but I don't know if it interior or exterior painting (probably interior since she's about my age).
