A Karen?

I asked Google.

In the Netherlands, dissatisfaction manifests itself very differently than in America. The typical American 'Karen'—someone who loudly demands her way, threatens to call the manager, and calls the police for the smallest things—clashes hard with Dutch culture.

In the Netherlands, the social dynamics are different: The 'Just act normal' culture: Extremely demanding behavior is quickly seen in the Netherlands as antisocial or embarrassing. People who behave this way are more likely to be spoken to, laughed at, or ignored here.

Less extreme hierarchy: Whereas in the United States, the consumer has the power to have people fired due to the 'the customer is always right' mentality, relationships in the Netherlands are much flatter. A waiter or employee here is not afraid to politely but firmly put a demanding customer in their place.


Some American men from a music band flied with a Dutch plane and they were complaining online that they didnt get VIP service.
So I said: The customer is not king in the Netherlands. Have respect for the guys who work for the airport. Even if you were a king we don't care. They blocked me LOL. They may have thought I was a Karen LOL. No I'm just rude. That's our culture hahahahahahaha.
 
A “Karen” is a slang term originating back in early 2000 to describe a middle aged white woman acting obnoxiously entitled. More recently though it’s evolved to any gender or race who acts entitled, demanding, or overly confrontational, especially toward workers or in public situations.

Typical “Karen” behavior in memes and internet culture might include:
  • Asking to “speak to the manager”
  • Complaining aggressively over minor issues
  • Acting like rules don’t apply to them
  • Calling authorities unnecessarily on other people
  • Being rude to service staff
“The customer screamed at the cashier because her coupon expired — total Karen behavior.”

The male equivalent is sometimes referred to as Chad.

I seem to recall this started with a woman actually named Karen who exhibited all the obnoxious "Karen" characteristics in a utube video that went viral. Until that time, such characteristics were obvious from time to time, but didn't have a name. I wonder how the original Karen is doing today. Talk about being known as the defining example of a special type. Ouch!

Interesting info!

When I first heard (read) it, I thought it was from that movie "A Christmas Karen," but found it started before the movie was made.
 
like everything blown way out of proportion and the label no longer has any meaning.
Are there people who may overreact because at some point in their world they got away with it? Yes.
Now any item people think they can call someone a Karen like an insult........... but if everyone is a Karen then no one is.

I just do not get why all rude behavior, or jerk moves need to be labeled.

I've never heard the names 'Dick' or 'Peter' defended so eloquently, or defended at all for that matter.
