A little about myself

Hi everyone. I'm new at this website. Any suggestions? I'm retired and do many crafts, sewing,diamond paintings....and more things. Looking for a small dog for companionship. Or a cat, which I never have had in house, any suggestions? Dog or cat? Hope someday to make friends on here and meet for lunch. I am widowed and it can get very lonely at times esp. now during coved. I am in the Pittsburgh area. Thank you.

I would say cat, but you can't really take one for a walk if they refuse to walk, so maybe a small dog.
You will love it here, so many awesome caring people.

Hi Nancy. Welcome. I've had mostly dogs all my life. Nothing is better.

The downside:
An easy way to know if you want a cat or dog is to ask yourself, do I want to clean the kitty litter pan often or do I want to walk the dog no matter the weather outside. Unless you live on lots of acreage in the country you will need to pick up their poop on walks. Cat urine is harder to get rid of than a dog's. Cat urine can ruin a carpet forever. Some cats spray on walls and furniture. Vet bills and grooming can be pricey. Fleas, ticks, and shedding must be dealt with. Some dog breeds don't shed. Puppies need to be housebroken. If you don't have the patience then look for a dog over a year old...sometimes it takes longer.

The upside:
All of the above can be worth it if you find the right pet for you because they can truly be a gift from heaven. Statistics show that people live longer who have a good pet. They are healers. Whenever I've been in the market for a pet, I go to the local animal shelter and ask them if I can walk the dog I have chosen. If he walks me instead of me walk it then that's not the dog for me. I get on the dogs level and stare in his eyes. There needs to be a connection.
 
HI Nancy... welcome. It sounds like you have quite a lot to occupy you while we're all in lockdown.

I'm a dog person so I'd always vote for a small dog, but remember a dog (or a cat for that matter)... isn't just for the pandemic.. remember when it's all over and you have your time to go out with friends and family you'll still have them to take care of.. but I'm sure you've already thought of that.

How about a miniature labradoodle, or a poodle. They don't shed, and they are super intelligent and friendly dogs.. don't get anything too small or too large you don't want to be tripping over it.

In them meantime ..you'll make many new friends here to keep you company ..

Hi, I'm in the middle of a frozen Canada & I welcome you to this very nice website. I hope you'll like the people here & I hope that you will find some rather interesting & educational postings. Regarding your pet, I was born & raised out in the country way back in the 50s. We had dogs, cats, horses & plenty of chickens. It seems to me that having a pet has become a major industry these days. Just check out the pet section of WallyMart. There are even whole stores for pets. As an adult, I never had a pet. There is a lot of work with them. Most dogs live 14 plus years so don't fall for those "puppies for Christmas" scams. It's true that as our society gets more and more into technology & there is less and less human touch, a pet can be a life-saver. People with pets do live longer than lonely people with no one to talk to. In the apartment where I live there are some "doggie" people living on the main floor. I meet them when they walk their dogs. Many have told me that if it wasn't for their dog they would never take a walk. I have escaped our winters, when I was younger, by heading for Texas & Mexico so a dog or cat wouldn't work for me. Beside I have too many hobbies. Still hope to travel some when this "stupid" pandamic is over. Last comments: A lot of people where I live have got their dogs from rescue shelters & the dogs are very loyal. I'll not tell you whether dogs or cats or parrots are for you but I wish you the best of luck. Remember you can talk to your pet all day & they will never ever tell you to shut up. LOL

Hi Nancy! I would go visit a shelter and ask to see both, cats and dogs. Spend a bit of time with each. See which ones tug your heart strings and then make your choice. Personally, I have always been a cat person but have had other pets too. As much as I loved my dog, cats were less pressure. If you like to go out with friends there is no pressure on getting home at a certain time. Cats need a litter box but I never found it was that much trouble as long as you cleaned it daily. Whatever you pick, your pet will love you and need you as much as you need him/her.

Welcome to the forum, Nancy.

I'm a dog person, because I have cat allergies. I have known lovely cats though. As others have pointed out, there are pros and cons to having either. Do your research, and don't be too hasty with your decision. The saddest thing would be to make a mistake and have to return the pet.

Dog. A dog wont climb your curtains, jump up on your kitchen counters and maybe high up on your kitchen cabinets. A little dog gets it walk around your house. A dog can be trained to potty in one place In the yard and cleaning a litter pan, 🤮.

You could look at all the different sections, here at our website, and find ones on all of your hobby crafts,
and the section on pets, too. I hope you find us interesting and interactive, enough to fill a part of your needs.

It's great that you are physically able to keep up with any of your crafts!

I would take time to learn as much as possible about each, if you've never had a cat or dog. They do have different care needs.

Katlupe had some good suggestions, above, along with the other posters.
A dog is good if you want it to get you outdoors and walking.
If you don't want or cannot be on their needed schedule, then a cat is the better match for your own situation. Either would be good company, if you like the one, and if the indivisdual's personality matches your needs, too.

In addition to us, you could also ask animal shelters about the particular types of behaviors, of a type of dog, and the specific individual dogs or cats behaviors.

Lunch is probably out as we live in Wisconsin 😂, but I’m all in for the forum friendship💕
We have had dogs and cats...love both
We currently ently live in an apt and are only allowed cats and I do so love my rescue cat Boo!!! She honestly is as loving as any dog we’ve had. Runs to the door when we come in, sticks to me like velcro, and the new best part for me? She doesn’t have to go outside when it is miserable outside 😂.
Post some of your diamond paintings when you can. Would like love to see them!!!
