A of history in the form of books, documents and artifacts lost this week. Including a burned library and pillaged artifacts.

Sad and infuriating at the same time especially when it's destroyed on purpose.

Wether you agree or disagree with history you don't destroy if for no other reason as a reminder of what to avoid.

Last time I saw real signifigant historical items destroyed it was the best indicator of things to come.

On the surface things are rarely what they seem. Using it as a predictor is harder yet. It assumes that one course of action in the human history is better than another. Book burning in the age of digital, is certainly more symbolic than effective.

When in history have we seen this before.
 

Let's see pulled down the Berlin Wall (built to stop communism, or was communist built to stop capitalism)
pulled over the statue of Lenin
pulled over statue of Hussein
(can't trust a mob I guess)
we should make them wear black or white hats

I believe your first comment correction was right. It was the communist in Germany that built those walls. To keep the Germans from escaping to the non communist parts. One of the first things that got changed as the communists were losing control over east Germany.
 
I saw a movie a long time ago depicting the destruction of the ancient library of Alexandria. After a few online inquiries it appears no one is really sure who set it on fire; ancient Christians, Julius Caesar or a Muslim caliph.

Glad they pulled the wall down, a section of it sets just 15 minutes north of my house. I can go see history first hand now at Fulton Missouri where it sets. I doubt if I would have seen it otherwise.

That's good. That's why try to preserve artifacts and documents from history. You don't have to save everything like a hoarder but you need to preserve enough so people like yourself can see and be reminded of what can happen. I didn't realize this but with the Berlin Wall they made great efforts to preserve it or pieces of.

In answer to QS's question, seems to me a fella with a funny little mustache might have burned a few books before he gassed a few million humans.

Lots of times. I've seen Egyptian temples where the Christians had taken over the buildings and defaced all the carvings because they were considered to be idolatrous. Let's not forget the English Civil War when Cromwell's men gutted cathedrals and churches, knocking the heads off marble statues. The Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral has a full set of headless statues.

During the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks destroyed over 50,000 churches and murdered tens of thousands of orthodox Christians and clergy.

During WWI, the entire city of Dresden, Germany was completely destroyed by firebombing by the Allies.
