Reading the latest Popular Mechanics mag there is an article about a giant magnet being built. It will stand 59 feet tall, 14 feet wide and weigh about 1,000 tons. It will end up in France at the site of the largest fusion reactor, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) by 2023. It is being assembled in California by General Atomics. It will generate enough force to lift an aircraft carrier weighing 225 million pounds six feel in the air. It will generate 15 million amps of electrical current. I have always regretted not being intelligent enough as so many people are in science.

Hmm. Why would they want to do this? For repair purposes?

I wouldn't want to walk under the aircraft carrier. The magnet might work, but whatever would be supporting the magnet could fail.
