Car Cannibalism, thieves are targetting body parts
of cars, rather than steal the whole vehicle, they are
taking, doors and bonnets, without moving the car,
they take bits from cars at night, while the car is in
the owners drive, 3 Land Rover Defenders had their
doors removed at Glastonbury, while the drivers were
at the music festival.

Shame, this country has gone to pot, big time. Not forgetting catalytic converters.

https://www.met.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/keeping-vehicles-safe/catalytic-converter-theft/

yep.. but at least with Catalytic convertors.. it's been made illegal for car parts and junk yards to buy them... the problem with stripping a car (car cannibalism).. is that what they take is worth very little money in resale value comparitively.. something in the range of around £1500 - £2000 in what they remove... but the car owner has to replace those parts at up to 5 times the cost..

Because I live in Calif, where there's leniency for criminals and lynch-mobs for car owners, if your catalytic converter is stolen you can only replace it with one purchased in California, that is California-approved, and they're about $100 more expensive than anyplace else in the country. And the world. So you can't order one from Amazon, either. Or anywhere.

Because California catalytic converters produce fewer emissions (supposedly). And, they do check (supposedly).

With all these theft type crimes ... i am at a loss why they do not target the people BUYING the stolen goods.. or otherwise enabling the criminals

They used to do "john" stings for prostitution was fairly effective .... in our city they listed the "johns" and then they had to face family neighbors and friends.
certainly the places or people buying parts KNOW why it is less expensive. It is not rocket science .... find the body shops who deal in these "replacement parts " etc and shut them down if end user is punished for creating the demand for stolen items the $$$$ dries up for the criminal

I think anyone on FB or Ebay etc selling ( often stolen) good deals ...............the SITE should be like pawn shops required to really verify seller so if found stolen they can trace the person to who stole good.

Let me toss in a conspiracy theory.
The insurance companies are behind the thefts.

The problem is.. 90% of all these thefts including whole high End Vehicles are very quickly shifted off to Eastern Europe... or Africa..

Staying more or less on the OP's topic, this is happening in many places and not just the UK. I hope someone in one country or another will come up with a solution that the people can implement since it's obvious that underfunded and understaffed police forces cannot.

Here it is whole cars and I would think even more so than parts although converters are a big item.

The problem is.. 90% of all these thefts including whole high End Vehicles are very quickly shifted off to Eastern Europe... or Africa..

Here they go to Mexico, right down an Interstate highway and over an open border, at least the ones that are stolen by theft rings. A lot are stolen for joyriding and eventually recovered but often in unusable condition.

those who are shipping .. are they aware of what they are shipping for customs or documents? ........ my guess is yes.
here in states if a company were to haul stolen goods that would be a crime. The harder it is for criminal often results in less money made if they need to payoff co-conspirators.

As a former German, where prostitution is regulated and accepted, I always find the North American intolerance of it strange and puritanical. It leads to abuse of the sex workers by organised crime***, pimps and police alike, whose time would be better spent to go after car "cannibals!" If they do that over here!

just saying end users of any items deemed criminal .......that was just an easy example.
Not judging but really do not see even in regulated situations where that would be a viable career choice IMO.

of course..because these things are stolen to order...

Does the law, in your country, mandate that you have a car insurance policy in order to be licensed to drive?

It might seem 'strange and puritanical' but if you realize that most prostitution is run by gangs, cartels and the pimps who work for them and often staffed by trafficked girls and boys then it becomes a more worthwhile thing to stop, at least to me.

But that's exactly my point. In Germany brothels are supervised by the state and the sex workers pay taxes, get medical exams etc. just like regular employees. At least it used to be that way. I haven't checked lately! But our system in the U.S. and Canada encourages the horrendous abuse by the thugs you mention. We've made our laws more liberal but by punishing the "johns" you also punish the sex workers. The profession is as old as our civilisation and trying to curtail or do away with it is futile. As I said, our efforts should be spent on the increase in violence and crime in general rather than imposing our morality on others.

At least they are attacking vehicles, instead of people. Here, in the US, a senseless mass shooting is almost becoming a routine part of the daily news.
Maybe you need to bring back home those "wonderful" cluster bombs you sent to The Ukraine?

I wonder if unscrupulous body shop owners "order" the parts they need from the thieves, and charge the customer as if the parts weren't stolen.

You missed the tax point. Anything a government can legalize they can tax and that's the attraction. We were told that legalizing marijuana would cut out illegal trafficking but it's still cheaper to buy it illegally. No tax. That may well be true of prostitution also.
