A question for Vegans!

JMO, whatever I’m eating I try to keep it as natural as reasonably possible and moderate the amounts.

The wife of my husband's friend was a strict vegan & was that way for many years. From what I understand, she didn't eat processed vegan foods, just the pure natural things. Then she started to become ill & after seeing different doctors, one finally told her if she didn't eat real food like meat protein, she was only going to get worse. Reluctantly, she added fish & chicken to her diet & her health improved. I don't know how many other vegans experience this since I don't know any.

IMO, we are omnivores. We have two eye teeth, aka canine teeth. They are there for a reason. As for me, I'll eat my pork, chicken, beef, deer, buffalo & elk. I will also eat my fair share of all types of veggies. My dairy consists of all types of cheeses, eggs & milk. We do our best to eat a balanced diet.

I heard once that bacon was the best meat to turn vegetarians back into meat eaters.
Strict vegans are told to take vitamin B12 supplements. It's about the only nutrient you can only get from animal sources.

It’s hard to be a fully-consistent vegetarian or vegan, and the lifestyle often occurs along a continuum scale. George Bernard Shaw was considered a vegetarian, but horrified his fellow vegetarians by once being seen chomping on a hot dog. Like my father was, I’m in the camp of consuming little meat.

Too much knowledge can also be a dangerous thing. After taking a college course in embryology, it was years before I could look at an egg with intent to eat it… 🙀

We were all taught to eat a "balanced diet" with something from all four food groups (a square meal.) What we didn't know was that the idea was developed by the agricultural and dairy industries and may or may not be what's really best for us.

Brought to you by the dairy industry in 1951 where we find that "milk is the reducing diet's best friend" (at 165 calories per small glass.)

I take it sporadically but also dump nutritional yeast in a lot of things and it's loaded with B vitamins. When I had some blood work done, I specifically asked for B12, it was fine. My D was low. I supplement that now.

I wonder how Vegans feel about eating insects. I hear that's the protein source of the future and very earth friendly.
We already do. Insect and animal loss are a side effect of factory type farming.

This sounds like the 'if you were stranded on an island' scenario which isn't going to happen.

I take a daily vitamin that includes more than the RDA of B12. Also take D3.

When I stopped eating meat and dairy, in the first year I surprisingly and effortlessly lost the stubborn 25 lbs I'd gained (mostly due to years of antidepressants during menopause for hormone-related panic attacks). No problem keeping it off. After going WFPB and eating even more potatoes, quinoa and rice than before, I lost another 6-7 lbs without effort. Go figure.

It's been about 4 years and I've kept all of it off.

As far as my general health, blood work numbers, muscle strength and endurance, I'm in better shape than most 71 year olds. Leaving meat and most dairy behind has had no physical detrimental effects that my doctor or I can detect.

Why do some on plant based diets sometimes choose to eat fish as opposed to other meat?
Good question that I can only answer for myself. When in a situation where my choices are fish or meat, I'll opt for fish because I preferred fish to meat even before going plant based.
