A Rant About Amazon's Site

The trouble with "Best Buy" is that they got rappers working there. Just little kids that want to earn money so they can buy more games. When I go there, I pick something up without talking to anyone, except that checkout person.

It seems Best Buy hires kids off the streets, which I guess is a good idea unless, of course, you the customer needs to talk to someone who know something about electronics.

...again, same here.. go into any big box electrical store.. ask a question about any item, and the response will be a long vacant stare...from one of the many who've just celebrated their 12 th birthday..or at least that's how they look

The thing I like about Newegg is that [generally] there's a decent level of product information, actually from the manufacturer, including manufacturer's product page / support. Almost never does Amazon have a better price on a specific item than Newegg, free shipping is a separate matter. Amazon's product description & information is weak, at best. Amazon relies on a product's real and fake reviews to enhance sales, rather than verifiable specifications.

On the rare occasions that I do go to BestBuy I make sure to give the mostly ignorant sales staff a valuable lesson in real life electronics, and how to assist serious electronics customers.

I was very ticked at Amazon because a few weeks ago, for the first time, I got a message that they were not going to post my review (of a cute little pill crusher) because it didn't meet their standards. It seems they thought I may have been paid to do the review! My review included that I was amazed at how well it worked but that some people with arthritic hands might have trouble using it.

@MarciKS I usually do what you do when considering reviews...go to the 5 star and 1 star.

And they are forever trying to sell you insurance on the computer/TV/Game Console you just bought! I always tell them at the checkout before they can start, no insurance please!

I'm with @Devi on this, their home page was loaded with offers for computer related items along with 'Free shipping' on some items. Maybe it's like Amazon's & if you purchase a toilet brush once they show you related items since you either bought or looked at one & nothing more. It's about browsing history using the algorithms you have established.
Hmm. If that's true, it's probably due to cookies in your browser set by the site. Try dumping your cookies for New Egg, and try again.

Apparently, Amazon has decided to do away with the Ask A Question and Answered Questions functions on some of their listings. It sometimes appears it's there, but when you click on the Answered Questions link (which from there you could ask a question if you didn't see your answer), it just takes you to the Reviews; the Answered Questions are nowhere to be found.

So frustrating! I found the question function to be very helpful (it's saved me some money) and have answered some myself. Why, Amazon, why?!
I was just on Amazon and while scrolling down further on the page of an item I was thinking of purchasing was a long blank line that read ask questions in the reviews section. I clicked on that and asked a question. You might scroll down further and give it a little more of a looksy. If there's no reviews then I imagine there's no place to ask. Hope this helps.

I used it a lot and I miss it now.

Wow, that just happened to me for the first time at couple of days ago! I ordered some dressmaker's chalk and what I got, the brand name and UPC code on the box and the markings on the individual pieces inside were different from the listing. I decided not to ship it back but did leave a review saying the above and said I hoped that what I got was as good as what I was supposed to get. Welp, Amaz said they couldn't publish my review:

"Hello,

We couldn't post your review because it focuses on one or more of these topics:

  • Sellers
  • Delivery
  • Packaging
  • Pricing
  • Availability
Why isn't that allowed? These aspects vary by order and won't be relevant to all customers. That said, we want your feedback about sellers and packaging, just not in product reviews.

Please edit and resubmit your review. Before you do, make sure it meets all of our community guidelines."

Okay I guess me mentioning the box violated the Packaging guideline? Whatever. So I resubmitted it just saying what I received was not as described but hoped it was as good as what I was supposed to get. Still haven't heard if they're going to publish it or not, sigh.

That's BS Officer! I see reviews all the time that are annoying because they don't review the actual product but all the things that are listed in the topics above! Perhaps they are taking steps to eliminate those types of reviews now, who knows. Another thing I have noticed is that sometimes the product being reviewed doesn't seem to be the same as the one clicked on to see reviews. For that reason, I make sure to mention the name of the product in my reviews.

Electronic devices are mostly best bought locally. You may pay more, but returns are easier if it's local.

Ebay and Amazon make billions, and they're really poorly designed.

I worked for a company that made an app for the NHS. It was horrendous at times. When I asked them why they didn't fix it, I was told that the core of the app was written a long time ago, with little to no documentation. They were literally afraid to touch the old code in cased it broke the app entirely. So it remained......

No place within 100 miles of here to buy electronic devices except Best Buy which is a big chain outfit with poor untrained clerks who don't seem to know much more about what they're selling than I do.

Well, true. I assume you have somewhere close. I'm several miles from any post office, so returning to Amazon is a pain.

I've never had any issue leaving a review. One I wrote simply said product wasn't worth the money.

The Amazon Q&A had been increasingly used by people too lazy to bother reading or too ignorant to understand provided feature and specification information on amazon product pages and their links. The value of Q&A was that it forced sellers to provide such product information lest they receive many Q&A questions and thus appear to have offered a product without adequate information that bares on trust. Pushing such information into the Reviews is awkward because a person then needs to wade through a list of reviews hoping to find something addressing whatever their issue is.

I still buy much on Amazon without a Prime account usually after having enough item costs for free shipping. I have always noticed they are continually generally trying to improve their system.

Newegg would be my first alternate to Amazon, My laptop was bought at hp.com /w free shipping. Also have bought from B&H photo, but that was years ago. Only cheap places I would avoid would be Walmart & EBAY, too many items are refurbished & not thoroghly tested out.
Newegg ripped me off many years ago. Never forgot it.
