Yes, have driven many miles of those sorts of roads in Scotland, during a September twenty years ago. Enjoyed it.

It's called the Dalveen Pass and it's near Thornhill.

In my much younger days before the M74 was built, the roads up from Carlisle to S.W Scotland and Ayrshire might well have taken through Thornhill, though I'm less acquainted with that road than the ones further west. Dumfries and Galloway, as it now is, is a really nice area, and one that has been largely ignored as a tourist destination.
