I'm reading the biography of Wyatt Earp and early before putting on a badge he hunted buffalo. One chapter describes life out on the field about food and supplies one of which was whiskey. The typical make up or formula for whiskey was raw alcohol, colored from coffee, red pepper for sting and flavor toned with tobacco. (Nice eh?)
The quality as the book puts it, "was judged by the bite and the speed of the stranglehold after swallowing". There was one whiskey supplier named Snakehead Thompson. The reason for the nickname was he put heads of snake in his whiskey barrels for taste!! I'm sooooo glad I did not live back then.
