At 6 p.m. on Jan. 2, social workers in New Orleans moved the city’s last known homeless veteran into his new apartment – becoming the first US city to effectively eliminate veteran homelessness.

Homelessness advocates around the country are hailing New Orleans as a model for cities around the country looking to end homelessness, not just for veterans, but for all people needing a permanent home.

“The solutions that work for veterans are the solutions that work for all people,” says Laura Zeilinger, executive director of the US Interagency Council on Homelessness. “The problem is absolutely solvable when we invest in the practices that we know work.”

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu took that pledge one step further, promising to meet the goal by the end of 2014.This time last year, nearly 50,000 US veterans had no home to call their own, according to an annual count.

On Independence Day, first lady Michelle Obama launched the Mayor’s Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness. Since that time, more than 300 mayors, six governors, and 71 other local officials have joined the pledge to house every veteran by the end of 2015.

“We owe our Veterans our eternal gratitude for their service and sacrifice to this nation, and making sure they have a place to call home is a small but powerful way we can show our appreciation,” Mayor Landrieu said in a statement Wednesday, announcing that New Orleans had housed all known veterans in the Crescent City.

In total, the city has placed 227 veterans in housing since the start of 2014.

Other cities have made huge strides in this area as well. Both Phoenix and Salt Lake City have managed to house all chronically homeless veterans, who have experienced long-term homelessness. The city of Binghamton, N.Y., successfully housed its 21 homeless veterans in November 2014.

However, New Orleans is the first major city to be able to meet the needs of all homeless veterans, according to the US
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Vet's deserve the best we can give. Now if we could just manage to stay out of conflict for a generation we would have less need to try and rehabilitate or find homes for wars survivors.

This is an example of how the US is supposed to be operating. We should always be doing things locally using local efforts and justifications. We have a major problem with our central government in Washington thinking only they know what and how to do things to correct problems. We really need to stay more local, cities and states, and do all we can to keep the federals out of our personal lives. Just the way it was done for over 200 years before this current mess got started. The US is so far in debt know due to inconsiderate ones in our Congress that care nothing about expenses, it sounded good so they voted for it and let someone later figure out how it is going to work.

Davey...are you ok?

Its just a thing with me, I believe the only vets entitled to a home/apartment are the ones that served in actual combat.I have a lot of veterans friends and they kind of agree.

Most present and past Commanders In Chiefs will disagree with you.
As they all say "War is good business".
SAD but that's the way it is.

I think Davy is OK. I for one have been able to buy a home, but then I am a veteran. My blessing was that I was able to find jobs and from them I was able to put together a small savings that allowed me to buy into a home. The means to buy a home are out there but a lot depends on the willingness of many to buy a smaller first home in order to get started. Or to do with less, drive paid for older cars, eat conservatively, hold back on sports tickets, cut down or cut out drinking, smoking, drugs, and make sure your goal is to put aside enough for a decent down payment for a house. Also consider if you really want a house or would be just as happy as a renter. Some folks are just not home owners at heart. Somethings is broke, call the landlord, so much easier.

What about the millions that are not veterans? Can they get a home too?

Yeah.... what the hell??? Start giving all sorts of things to one group...like veterans... you have to give it to everyone...and I don't want my TAX dollar used for that nonsense... Why don't we give everyone a new car.. and a diamond ring?? HUH????? Slackers.... always wanting something for nuttin'... Right Davey?? /sarcasm

Why should our federal government be giving away our taxes to anybody at all. Federal control of what we do is just running the US down to the same levels of all the European governments. It is not a good thing to have happening, making any or all of us dependent on government handouts. We are really much better with local support for local problems than with these federal supports for imagined federal responses that may help a few but really handicap many others.
