A very close friend had a stroke yesterday.

I am in shock. We have been friends since we were 14-we had our firstborns two weeks apart. Our daughters are lifelong best friends. Her daughter messaged me this morning that she wasn`t feeling well yesterday-she felt "numb". She took her to the hospital and her BP was 250/135. All tests were coming back normal but a CAT scan today confirmed that she had a stroke. She will be in hospital for a couple of days and then in a rehab for a week or so. Her daughter says she has not been to a doctor in over 20 years! Yikes Mel-what are you thinking? Her dad died of a massive stroke at age 58. She is a veterinarian in Oregon and I guess it`s true what they say-Doctors make the worst patients. She is,of course, very worried about her practice. She is the only vet there. I`m just thankful that it wasn`t worse than it was....

I'm sorry to hear about your friend Mrs. Robinson, we've had some bad experiences with strokes in our family too. Wishing her a complete recovery. :rose:

Hope she gets better.

Yes,it seems strokes run in her family for sure. Even her daughter had a mini stroke in her late 30s-early 40s. Her older sister also passed away in her 50s but I don`t remember if it was a stroke or not. She had had gastric bypass surgery years ago and had never been healthy thereafter. I`ll have to ask the daughter if her aunt had a stroke or if it was something else.

As you know people do recover from strokes both my parents had strokes but they both lived into ther nineties.

There is two things that cause most all strokes one is a clogged artery do to a blood clot and that can e prevented with omega 3 fatty acids the other is an aneurism which is caused by a copper deficiency. It sounds like it was a clot it is not genetic but usual a family all eat the same things.
When people have a gluten intolerance the body has a hard time absorbing fatty acids.
I hope she is OK I love veterinarians because they do good work.

I don`t see Mel enough these days to know what her diet is like. I know back in the day,she took really good care of herself and took lots of supplements. Biggest problem here, from what I can see,is that she was apparently clueless that she had high blood pressure-if she had gone to the doctor for checkups, that would have been caught. I know her well enough to know that this will be a huge wake up call for her though, and that she will start taking better care of herself-and maybe let her adult kids start fending for themselves a bit. That was one thing that she had mentioned to me in emails a few times-that she was tired of working her butt off to support her adult kids who depend on her for everything. One is a professional student, working on her Masters (at age 46) and making a very meagher salary working for a non-profit. In fact, her job ends July 31st as they lost their funding. One is a musician who will not likely ever make it big-he and his wife live with her. Then her youngest works for her in her clinic as a vet tech, but with her off work, where does that leave her daughter? It will be a good thing if they all have to start standing on their own feet and will certainly take some of the stress off of her.
