I give her credit, glad she killed this cat before it attacked another person, also, they were able to test for rabies. I've been close to bears, coyotes and other wildlife, but never a wild cat yet....luckily I was never attacked by a wild animal. More here.

A Georgia woman saved her own life when she was attacked by a bobcat by overpowering the large feline and strangling it, according to local authorities.

Emergency dispatchers received a call about the incident after 6 p.m. on June 7, and when deputies got to the scene, the woman still had the bobcat by the throat and was holding it down on the ground, Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland told ABC News. The woman was in front of a relative's home, and several people were in the yard at the time of the attack, he said.

The woman was identified by the Hartwell Sun as 46-year-old Hartwell resident Dede Mealor Phillips.

The fully-grown bobcat had attacked the Phillips at least twice by clawing and biting her, Cleveland said. Every time she would loosen her grip a little, it would attack her again.

So, Phillips had no choice but to choke it, and another family member stabbed it with a knife for good measure, Cleveland said.
"She really didn't have a choice," Cleveland said. "She did the best she could, and she did."

Nancy could have held her own too against that bobcat. :D

This woman in New Jersey had to strangle a rabid fox that was attacking her leg, I hope if I'm ever in a position like that I'll be able to act fast and effectively, full story here.

A woman trying to fend off a rabid fox that was biting her in the leg reached down with one hand to hold shut its mouth and with the other strangled it.
"I couldn't do anything else to get it away from me," Tammy DuBois, 52, of Pittsgrove, told NJ.com "I don't like to kill anything."

The attack occurred July 18 shortly after she heard rustling in some bushes while she was walking out to her backyard garden. DuBois says the fox ran out and bit her leg multiple times, puncturing her skin.

She tried to escape into her house but couldn't while the animal gnawed on her leg, DuBois said.
"It was biting at my leg, I had to do something," DuBois said.

She grabbed the animal's snout with one hand and the fox's neck with her other hand, she said. The fox struggled to get free but soon went limp from being choked.

She cleaned and bandaged her badly bleeding leg and called her husband, who took her to a hospital, where she began a two-week series of rabies treatment.

Animal control officers retrieved the dead fox and sent it to the state for tests, confirming Monday it had rabies.
DuBois is the only human attacked by a rabid animal so far this year in Salem County, officials said.

OH dear Lord... Brave women ..

That fox one is always a worry for me , every time I go out in my back garden late at night , I wonder if a Fox will be there ( they do come in the garden from the woods behind).. butso far I'm lucky none have come in when I'm actually out there, and there's no reason why it should attack me..but you never know!!

This man survived an attack by a young mountain lion while jogging in Colorado.

Those reports are very scary. I'm rather glad we don't have large mammalian predators or rabies where I live.
The most aggressive species I have to deal with are the tiny black ants that run up my leg and nip me behind the knee when I'm sitting outside.

I hope those folks aren't getting hate mail from cat lovers but it would not surprise me it they did. The guy that killed the bobcat made it clear not to wear headphones if jogging where killer animals live. He also stated when the cat was dead he ran for two miles worrying about the cat's mother coming after him. I think I would join a gym or buy a home tread mill.:D

When we first moved to the forest, 16+ years ago, I sometimes saw some Bobcat tracks, and heard some strange "squeals" at night...and we had several red foxes that often came into the yard. I only saw the bobcats a couple of times, but kind of liked to watch the foxes, as they did their thing....they were almost tame. Over time, some of the neighbors began to raise chickens, and they pretty well thinned out the local "critters". Now, our only animal friends are the deers, squirrels, and an occasional armadillo, or possum...but as the climate warms, there are increasing reports about black bears migrating further North every year, so we may see some evidence of them before long.

I'm a cat lover and would never send hate mail to someone who was defending himself against an attack by an animal (4 or 2 legged). Nothing beats being outdoors in nature, in my opinion. Whether you're walking, jogging or just sitting there soaking in the beauty, it can't ever compare to a gym in a building or a treadmill in the house. I walk/hike outdoors when I can.

I have deer, coyotes, foxes, etc. near my house and I walk alone on nature trails and have never been attacked. I do stay aware of my surroundings and don't use headphones or anything that detracts from the outdoors. We've camped in lots of areas that had bears, elk, moose, etc., and seeing these magnificent animals is a real treat when they are close, luckily no personal attacks, but if they did, I'd fight for my life too. I haven't come across any mountain lions yet, but I understand they are elusive and will generally try to avoid people in the wild.
