A young and foolish pilot wanted to sound cool on the aviation frequencies.

This was his first time approaching a field during the nighttime, and instead of making any official requests to the tower, he said, "Guess who?"

The controller switched the field lights off and replied, "Guess where!"

I think I know this guy. Way back when, I started flying at Air Wisconsin. I was sitting in the right seat as the First Officer, but I had the aircraft, which means I was in control of the flight controls. (The Captain always has control of the plane.) We were flying from Baltimore to Louisville. If I remember correctly, we were just maybe a mile from touchdown into Louisville when the ATC (Air Traffic Controller) yells into my headset, "Go around, go around." I quickly pushed the throttles forward and raised the nose of the aircraft and just as I got air born again, I could see a Boeing 737 on my landing runway.

Needless to say, there was an investigation by the NTSB, the only one that I was ever involved in, and it was discovered that the ATC was only in his second day on the job and his mentor had just turned away from the screen for a moment an never noticed that the novice ATC almost had two planes on the same runway at the same point and at the same time. Man, I was sweating bullets.

Thanks for the smile.
