Considering potential for leakage and device damage, are you still buying/using alkaline cells?
There are both long shelf life high output single-use lithium cells and low self-discharge rechargeable NiMH cells now. Most of them won't ever leak and corrode battery contacts and ruin sometimes-expensive or relied upon devices.
This guy runs some rapid-fire testing on performance and price. Turn the volume down, his voice can be quite piercing.
