The Delivery driver knocked on the door today and had a package for me. It was labeled "Five foot Diamond back"! I carefully opened the box, and there it was...as advertised....a new, oak "Diamond Back Five foot" porch swing!...a real beauty, very similar to the old one which was my Grandmother's and bit the dust some years back. I was thrilled! I felt 'snake-bit'!:)

Meanderer, that looks so nice. I always think that it must be nice to have a 'porch' [we don't have them on houses here.]Swinging lazily on a Summer's evening. All you need are a few cushions and a mint julep [oh, that's more like the South isn't it?]What does PA stand for by the way, which State are you living in?Glad it wasn't a snake story [not too keen on them.]

PA is the abbreviation for Pennsylvania. I try to tell people I live in one of the Kettle states, but they never seem to get it. Years back there were"MA and PA Kettle" in the movies and later on TV. The other Kettle state would be Massachusetts (MA). :) This Summer, I have been drinking a lot of Snapple iced tea (Peach and Lemon). Hope to get it hung tomorrow.

I did get a jolt, when I saw "5 foot diamondback" on the box...also a chuckle. My favorite snake story is about an old Indian coming across a young brave, who was killing a bunch of black snakes. He told the brave "They are your friends! You must not kill them!" About a week later there roles were reversed, and the old chief was standing in the middle of a pack of dead snakes that he had just killed....when the brave appeared and asked "What are you doing"? "Well"....the old Indian slowly replied....."sometimes...you can have ...too many damned friends"!:)

Ah, thanks Meanderer. Why PA and not PE I wonder? I have read that there are a lot of people with Dutch ancestry in PA [as I will now call it] so you must have a lot of unusual words there? Put them on the thread about English words [even if they are Dutch?] I have been to Amsterdam, marvellous city, loved the Reiksmuseum, the canals and the tall houses.

Most of the people in PA are not Dutch. I have gotten into dutch (trouble) a few times growing up, and have been on a few dutch dates (pay your own way) in later years. I live in the Western part of PA. The abbreviations are decided by the US post office. I corrected the second Kettle state: Massachusetts (Maine is ME) Go figure.

I do remember the Ma and Pa Kettle series on tv.I wouldn't have known what was meant by the Kettle States though.
It is just how my brain works with words and patterns I guess. "Kettle" states is my term, nothing official.

Just in case...

LOL oakapple we definitely do have houses here with porches... some of my neighbours have them here in our village facing onto their back lawns. I don't have a porch but I do have a swing bench seat on the lawn.:D

Yes, it looks great Meanderer, I wish you many happy days sitting on it.
Hollydolly, I am surprised, as I have never seen the large porches [here] like in the US. Our porch is just big enough to take a parcel.
