Adult Christmas parties

My step mom was always big in having a Christmas party at her house back in the 50s. Everyone dressed nice, although I don’t remember any ostrich hats there, and everyone smoked. Notice this guys smoking jacket. I was in charge of making the Tom and Jerry drinks. I got egg nog.

My parents only had drinks at the holidays, usually at my aunt and uncle's house, or when we had guests at those times.

One year when I was 11, at my uncle's, my younger cousin who was only 9 showed me how to drink the remaining dregs of cocktails in the bottom of the adult's glasses while in the kitchen! I drank one but hated it.

I don't remember having Christmas parties at home but I will always remember my mother packing plates of cookies for me to take to the neighbors.

When I was old enough to attend adult Christmas parties I always seemed to end up in a corner of the kitchen or out on the back steps in the snow with a drink and a cigarette, good times and great memories.

I can remember my parents going out to Xmas parties all dressed up, my mother loving them and my father quite the opposite. It meant a sitter would be coming, or when I was slightly older I'd have the giddy experience of controlling the single TV set in the house and feeling like an adult!
