Getting old is hard enough and I was managing well I thought,
until today, when I received an email from my car insurer, they
are declining to renew my insurance cover, they gave no reason,
just said that it against their policy!

We're sorry, but we're unable to invite you to renew your car
insurance this year as you no longer meet our underwriting criteria.

Our inability to invite your renewal should not be considered as a
insurance refusal or cancellation and does not need to be disclosed
to any other current or future insurers.

So now I have to find somebody who will insure a getting older man.

They are quick to take the money, now I suppose they think that I am
"gaga" and will start driving like an idiot.

Funnily enough my car insurance was just renewed yesterday... it;s on automatic renewal and I was wondering how much they'd have increased my premiums by given that everything including insurance has rocketed in the last year.. but no, only 12 pounds.. a pound a month.. I'm with the RAC

So..do you know why they've refused you.. are you too old for their policies, who are they ? .. what's occurring ?

Well, that sucks! What the hell is their "underwriting criteria" and why don't you all of a sudden meet it? 😒 Is that the only "reason" they have to give for not renewing your policy? Jules is right. Call them and ask for a more clear explanation as to why they aren't renewing your policy.

What to Do When an Insurance Carrier Won’t Renew Your Policy? > https://www.netquote.com/auto-insurance/what-to-do-when-an-insurance-carrier-won-t-renew-your-policy

"Your insurer must follow some rules when not renewing your policy. It must, for instance, send you written notice that it plans not to renew your policy a certain number of days before your policy expires.

How many days depends. Some states require insurers to provide at least 30 days notice before non-renewal. Others require 45 days or 60. Check with your state to be certain.

Your insurer in its written correspondence must also provide a reason for not renewing your policy. This reason might be something that you did – too many speeding tickets – or it might be something out of your control, such as crime rates rising in your ZIP code. But whatever the case, your insurer must provide you with a reason."

That is amazing I have not thought about that before as being age related. Many years ago before we got old the auto insurance said they were going to cancel our auto insurance coverage because they were getting rid of that type of coverage. So we went to them and had to select a different type of coverage.

I reckon, that as I am going to be 81 next month has
a lot to do with it, another problem here is that most
rental companies won't rent a car if you are over 75,
I was thinking about flying North and renting, this is
another no,no.

I will call them, but it won't do any good, they have
said no, to my automatic renewal.

Mike,

This must be a common problem for folks your age.

Is there a senior center or advisory group that could help you find a solution.

I did a quick search and found a company called ageco that says they offer auto insurance to medically approved seniors. I do not know if this is a legitimate company or what the rates might be.

Good luck, Mike!

what company is it ?

Mike…….sorry to hear about your issue…..it certainly changes one’s way of life.
Will your drivers license be renewed or revoked as well.
Seems strange this is happening without some kind of notice.
I hope you can get a more clarified reason.
Can you try other vehicle insurance companies.

Here….once you reach a certain age, not sure, but I think it’s age 80, a person is notified for testing…..for your renual of driver’s license…..and sooner if a person is having too many driving insodents…..and or a person is reported for possible unsafe driving.
As far as our autopak, meaning vehicle insurance…..not sure about cancelation because of age.

Sorry this is happening Mike, here cancelation is rare, but rates often go up.

The truth is statistically older drivers are a higher risk, so insurers have to work with that. Not that you personally are, but insurance companies have to work with statistics...

Don't know about the UK, but here you can almost always find an insurance company who will take you, if you can afford the cost.

Here in Canada once you turn 80 in order to renew your drivers license you take a test. The test is a bunch of letters and you must circle each "h" letter. And you listen to a video. That's it.

Maybe they plan on having road signs in "h" in the future. hhh means stop, hh means yield, h means go :ROFLMAO:

I wonder if it's the" 7 year insurance"thing. Insur. companies were doing this a lot in the 90s. Supposedly, most have some kind of accident every 7 years. So, if you had no accident in 7 years, statistically you're due. So Ins, companies dropped people. with 7 years. If you have a million customers, it does work and it makes financial sense for the insurance company. .But age discrimination is illegal in the US.

In the US, if you are approved by the DMV as a safe driver, you are good to go,
and it would be against the law to mess with that based on age...it's age discrimination.

Maybe you can circulate a petition and submit it to change that.
You're a proactive kinda' guy so I wouldn't put it past you 👍

My parents house and car insurance got dropped and they were basically blackballed by their insurance company. They hadn't made a claim...ever. When they went to another insurance agency they were told they wouldn't insure them because they were dropped by the previous one. They ended up having to go to an insurance broker who got them insured by some obscure company and paid through the nose for 3 years until the "blackball" was lifted. I don't know how that was even legal. I was only a teenager when this happened to them, but looking back on it now I think I would have gone to court over that.

I don't know if it's allowed to mention the name of this company, but it's a major insurance company. I never forgot this episode with my parents, and to this day I wouldn't insure my tool shed with them much less anything else.

Why wouldn't it be allowed to mention a bad insurance company. Was it Geico?
I reported Geico to the NC Insurance Commissioner for refusing not to charge me for my son's car that wasn't being driven (I had proof) and within 2 days I was refunded $600. I had argued with Geico till I was totally worn out for months because I was unaware I could receive such swift and fair results from our state's insurance Commissioner.
