Ageism Is Going To Find Many Of Its Offenders In Hot Water.

I am currently in the hospital because my apartment buildings management kept ignoring me.
On August 4th I awakened to my entire apartment floor, soaked with water, from an obvious leak. Instead of finding the source of the leak, they invaded my apartment with a huge, loud, ugly, dusty, industrial fan to dry the floor. I had to insist they move the fan from the middle of the floor because I have significant vision loss and am prone to falling. They would YELL at me that it is procedure to have the fan where they placed it to resolve the issue.

Everyday that I awakened and that floor is wet, I make a maintenance report because if I dont, the will not come to my apartment. In the report I am sure to include my vision loss, my being prone to falling and how wet floors and company equipment adds to the danger of my falling. And the risk of mold forming.

Their fan without finding the source idea, did not work. Everyday, they come out, that floor was wet.
I called 311, Code Enforcement, Adult Protective Services, my case manager, and anyone else who would listen.

On Thursday the 14th an inspector of the housing authority went into my bedroom and tore a piece of vinyl flooring up to investigate how wet the concrete underneath was. (My bed was moved into the livingroom 2 day prior. My bathroom is in my bedroom.). He haphazardly discarded the removed piece of flooring across the room.
The invesitagtor informed me that I will have to leave my apartment for 6 to 8 hours on Friday. The plan they devised was to remove the flooring in the entire apartment, use fans to dry the concrete and replace flooring.

At 3:00am on Friday the 15th. I attempted to go to the bathroom when I suddenly slipped on that discarded piece of flooring, on to that hard concrete floor. Thank God it was suggested to me that I sleep with zippered sweat pant, allowing me to keep my cell phone on me at all times. It became obvious that it was not a matter of "if" I would fall but "when".
To add injure to my injure, I had to scoot across the floor in order to unlock the doors for the EMT workers. I was like a bad Grace and Frankie episode where they had to scoot for the phone after they fell to the floor.

I am here in the hospital where the plan is the discharge me to a physical therapy rehabilitation center for a few weeks. Prayerful my apartment will be healthy for me to come home to.

If my disabilities had been made priority to them instead of wanting to cut corners. This could have been avoided. People ignore our thoughts, opinions and concerns because we are "older".

My brother has gotten the law firm of so and so involved and now my building management is calling me to gently outline what I can expect in my apartment when I return home. Now they wnat to consider me and my risk, without yelling at me, none the less. Ridiculous!

Oh I'm sorry this has happened to you, what a fright you must have got when you fell.. and looking at that piece of flooring which was discarded that would have been almost invisible to anyone with good vision much less someone who has not.

I hope your injuries are just minor, and that your apartmtnet is being made ready for you when you go home... but really .. what a horrible situation for you.. get well soon 💐💐

It's awful you fell on a discarded piece of flooring, it could have been avoided with a bit of common sense on the workers part by not leaving a piece of flooring laying in a walk way. Hope your recovery goes well.

As to their approach.....if water was slowly seeping in the source can be hard to identify, I would guess their plan was to dry the floor and then monitor it and find where the wet spot starts. Tearing up an entire floor is cost and labor intensive, especially since the source of the leak could be off in a corner. If it was my home my approach would be identify the leak if possible before tearing anything up.

I'm not trying to minimize your injury or excuse their negligence, just trying to offer an explanation of why they wanted to dry the floor before tearing it all out.

We dealt with the water leak/drying thing some time ago, we had a bad storm late one night and thankfully we got the barn-height ladder out and used leftover wood/roof metal/Visqueen to help run off the worst of the water, although plenty came in due to a damaged roof from the early storm impact. So, we had the noisy-as-heck water drying system mentioned earlier to dry out the home. Indeed, this method, while it does work, leaves a lot to be desired in the meantime. I can totally understand how you had problems walking in your home. I believe insurance should pay for a better way to solve this issue. I think they could have found where the worst damage was without tearing such a large portion of flooring away.

Sorry to hear you went through all that. I do believe issue resolution has a ways to go to be comfortable and effective for our homes and private lives. Perhaps a government agency has something to do with the way these cases are resolved (?)

Thank you for your well wishes. I deeply appreciate it.
I have no idea of repair matters. My only concern was my safety. The building is for seniors and disabled persons, of which I am both. After 10 days of no resolve, and wet floors, maybe offer me an unoccupied apartment until you figure it out? I get angry when I think of ways in which this could have been avoided and I could have been treated better.

Your understanding of the emotional side of this is appreciated. My body shivers when it remembers how it felt to feel my body hitting the floor. S

Kya, your situation is unacceptable but hardly unique these days. Most decisions are made considering only the immediate cost, with little consideration of the impact on our lives.

I seem to remember a time when kindness and and support were not only valued but encouraged.
Thanks for understanding.
Good old fashion respect and human decency is gone with the Landlines Phones and Big Mama. Its profit over people today.
Smh!!!!

This is so frustrating for you as you were telling them the issues and they couldn’t be bothered. Wishing you smooth healing.
Thank you. They are acting like they hear me now. That make me angry. As the young people say. They are playing in my face.

Yes, an attorney should be looking into this for the best outcome.

Your medical plan may also investigate to see if the property owner is responsible for your injuries, and file an action against them or their insurance provider.
