Five people aboard a Japanese coastguard plane have died after their aircraft collided with a passenger plane at Tokyo's Haneda Airport
The coastguard plane was due to deliver aid to areas hit by Monday's deadly earthquake
All 379 people on board the burning Japan Airlines plane were evacuated, the airline said

As I read it, the coastguard plane was not given priority on the runway, but was slotted in between scheduled flights.
It was struck by the landing passenger jet which burst into flames. From the pictures on the news, it was little short of a miracle that all the
passengers and crew escaped.
 

The coastguard plane, who lost 5 men, was disaster relief to the victims of the Earthquake. The coastguard plane collided with the commercial plane just seconds before landing on the runway fully ablaze.

The commercial plane's cabin was full of smoke when all 379 exited safely. Amazing! They all followed rules and regulations as they entered the shoots. The women removed their high heels so as not to rip the shoot etc

Seen it on YouTube under Sky news Live and a few others which shows the moment of impact. So sad, RIP to the lost souls...
 
Runway incursions are caused by one of two things. Either ground controllers aren’t paying attention or pilots don’t know how to read the runway markers and/or understand the colors of the lighting.

There’s probably more runway incursions than any other type of aviation accident here in the U.S. These accidents usually happen among smaller planes with less experienced pilots.

I had just landed at O’Hare flying a B-767 with about 300 souls onboard when I was directed to a gate on the other side of the airport. On the way over, I came upon two different planes taxiing in my runway. Had I not been alert and stopped, we would have had a huge catastrophe.
 
They're crediting the successful evacuation to the fact that people didn't try to bring personal belongings with them.
This begs the question of why doesn't the overhead storage have central locking?
People other than the Japanese might well have tried to bring all their crap with them...
 
I saw that on the news. The last news I saw they were trying to figure out who was actually at fault. What a terrifying scene. I can't imagine knowing my loved one died like that. May they R.I.P. and may their families be comforted. That no one in the passenger plane was killed is amazing. The crew did a great job of evacuating the passengers and KUDOS to them as well for remaining calm.
