Airport security trays carry more cold germs than toilets, study finds

To all the places and surfaces we’ve been warned are teeming with germs or bacteria — your pets, the subway seat, airplane cabins, the ATM — add the airport security tray.

The plastic trays — used at airport checkpoints around the globe and touched by millions of passengers as they drop shoes, laptops, luggage and other items into them to clear X-ray scanners — have been found to harbor a variety of germs, including the ones responsible for the common cold, according to researchers in Europe.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., Emirates Airlines said only about 10 passengers from Dubai had taken ill. Passengers said the number was in dozens, and the CDC issued a statement that 100 people were sick.

“Even well before the flight when we were on line getting on board (in Dubai), there were people that were obviously very sick that should not have been allowed to get on board in the first place,” said passenger Erin Sykes.
 

Any place where people gather in large numbers, in a limited space, puts everyone at some elevated level of risk for contracting an illness. Heck, just going to a grocery store, and grabbing the handle on a cart can give a person a good sample of what the previous person sneezed into their hand.

Yep, grocery shopping carts are the worst! I use those wipes they provide, but...just sayin' flu season is coming, so be aware of things you may not have thought of before.
 
The bottom of our purses are deadly esp. if your setting them down in the bathrooms while out and about then setting them down on our tables or kitchen counters, yuck....I consciously dont do that anymore....
 
What about money? It always puzzles me why we address such items as listed here but money changing hands is never listed. What is curious about the recent airplane breakouts is why all of the sudden and why so many affected?
 
Airplanes have always been germ factories. Nothing new about that.

About money, it always bothers me when I see employees at food take-out counters handling food and then taking your money, giving change, etc. I think the money handling should be done by different people than those handling the food.

Then our food would cost more Sunny. It's already high enough to eat out.

Also germs here and there help build up our resistance. Children who play outside without their mom's chasing them around with a wash cloth are less apt to catch everything that comes down the pike. And that follows them clear into their adult years. Of course, there are a few exceptions.

That being said, I am careful about the bottom of my purse. Hopefully my husband is with me as he's secure in his manhood and doesn't mind standing around in public holding a pink or red purse. Otherwise, I will say, it's hard to keep your balance sitting on a toilet with a purse balanced on top of your head!

Linda, too funny. Very few bathroom stalls offer hooks for handbags.

I haven't flown for many years so that was something I hadn't thought of.

It's true that people do need to be exposed to some germs, to build antibodies. Thanks for pointing that out.
 
Because of all of the reasons stated above is why I carry and use a hand sanitizer, especially in the winter during cold and flu season.
 
Yes, I would imagine that they do because I have never noticed anyone ever sanitizing them. As for airplanes being disease ridden, in defense of the aircraft itself, I have seen many studies that state the air is cleaner than probably in most other public places. According to the CDC, most diseases are spread and caught among each other while traveling in the aircraft. I know it may be hard to believe, but being a pilot for 34 years, I had very few colds and flu over that time period. I actually had gone 14 consecutive years without a missed day due to being ill.
 
All surfaces in public are germ laden, just need to not be touching your mouth, eyes or nose while out.
