Alaska health care worker had severe allergic reaction to Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine

The case is the only allergic reaction to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine reported in the United States so far.

A health care worker at the Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, Alaska, developed a severe allergic reaction shortly after receiving the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine Tuesday evening, and had to be hospitalized overnight.

During a media briefing Wednesday, health officials said the middle-aged woman had no history of allergies and had never experienced anaphylaxis, a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction.

Bartlett Regional Hospital officials said all 96 of its workers who received the vaccine Tuesday were observed for 30 minutes after the shot. The woman starting feeling flushed about 10 minutes into that observation period, and took Benadryl, an antihistamine.

However, her symptoms progressed to an elevated heart rate and shortness of breath, and was sent to the hospital's emergency department.

"She had a red, flushed rash over her face and torso," Dr. Lindy Jones, the emergency physician who treated her, said during the briefing Wednesday. "I was concerned about an anaphylactic reaction." Jones gave her an emergency injection of epinephrine.

Her symptoms abated for a short time, but then re-emerged. She was put on intravenous epinephrine, and moved to the hospital's intensive care unit where she remained overnight. Jones said the woman did not necessarily require ICU resources, but added, "we are a small little hospital here, so if we are concerned about anyone, we put them in the ICU."

As of Wednesday morning, the woman was off all medications, and was expected to be discharged Wednesday evening.

Pfizer said in a statement that the company is "working with local health authorities to assess" the reaction that occurred in Alaska, and will "closely monitor all reports suggestive of serious allergic reactions following vaccination and update labeling language if needed."

I'm sure that there will be some people who experience a problem with these vaccines. As I understand it, the people who get the shot are told to remain seated and still for several minutes after the shot, because if they have an allergic reaction, it will probably happen quickly. And I'm sure there will be some who have a problem weeks or months later. But, that seems to be the norm with ANY drug....just listen to the disclaimers on these "ask your doctor" drug commercials.
If these shots work as well as the early indicators say they do, and can reduce the numbers to a fraction of what they currently are, the rewards far outweigh the risks.....IMO.

If you get one be sure to let us know what happens.

I don't think a few allergic reactions should deter others from getting the vaccine. People are allergic to all kinds of things. I had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) to a tetanus shot when I was a kid, and have been advised not to have another and there are red flags on all my medical records and inocculation records. However, I've never had any reaction to other vaccines and have gotten them all my life without problems.

Just because you are allergic to one thing doesn't mean you're allergic to something else.

Interesting that she was treated with Epinephrine. I can't have Epinephrine because it caused a serious irregular heartbeat at the dentist & she wanted to call paramedics when I couldn't stand up. Of course, I'm not getting a Covid vaccine, anyway, but that's just one issue.
It must feel strange when someone gets a serious, life-threatening reaction to a vaccine they took to protect them from something they never had.

I couldn't get the link to work. Here's another one that's a bit more in depth:
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/12/16/...eaction-coronavirus-pfizer-vaccine/index.html

"The cases are the first allergic reactions to the vaccine to be widely reported in the US, although health officials said they are expecting the occasional allergic reaction -- and are prepared to treat anyone suffering from one."

When I had pneumonia back in the 70s I was given a massive shot of penicillin or one of its cousins. I remained in my doctor's office for half an hour so they could monitor me for an allergic reaction, despite never having had any prior problems with antibiotics. (No reaction that time either, I'm happy to say.)
