Alcohol and blood pressure

I tried it. In the short term alcohol will lower your blood pressure. My insurance agent advised me to take a shot of brandy before an insurance medical exam. My blood pressure recorded 116 over 51. Apparently it expands the vessels.

Alcohol gets a bad rap, but that only applies to excessive use. In small amounts, there are benefits. And, in my opinion it's safer than prescription drugs. I'm not saying that because I like it; I rarely drink. It reminds me of the "Sun Exposure" thing. Yeah...hours & hours may not be good; but the right amount of exposure is beneficial. It's how we get much of our Vitamin D.

The effects were temporary. Hopefully they didn't run a blood test at the same time.

Problem with alcohol and blood pressure is the vessels shrink back up. With excessive consumption that expansion and contraction can wear out or harden vessel walls especially if one has existing high bp.

Numerous studies have shown that a small amount of alcoholic beverage can be beneficial to most people. The problems occur when people overdo it.

Excessive alcohol intake does the opposite for a lot of abusers. When I worked in dialysis, I counseled a new patient who was a young man with hypertension and a history of alcohol abuse to try to stop drinking to see what it would do for his blood pressure. He was able to do it, blood pressure normalized and he was able to quit dialysis. It's rare to see the kidneys kick back in enough to stop dialysis. He swore he'd never drink again. I believed him--to have such a dramatic health improvement would make a teetotaler out of most people.
