Alka Seltzer.

Alka Seltzer has been around forever and is probably considered 'old school' now days and although I don't use it very often I always keep some in the house for those times that I feel like after a meal that I'm feeling a little bloated or gassy and just need a good burp. :)

Anybody else still keep Alka Seltzer in the medicine chest and take it once in awhile ?

I do, and am considering taking it on a more regular basis . I have been reading quite a bit lately about the positive effects of an 'alkaline' body, and Alka-Seltzer is considered a safe way to achieve it.

Kinda ? makes sense when ya consider how much better one feels after the 'burp' you note, so why not give it a try?

I use baking soda instead. Accomplishes the same purpose and gives you some options.

I don't use Alka Seltzer either, because I don't like to take aspirin. Like Jane, I use baking soda, of course if you have a sodium restricted diet or high blood pressure, you might not want to do that.

To keep my body more alkaline, I take a half glass of water in the morning, with 2 tablespoons of pure organic lemon juice and 1/3 of a teaspoon of baking soda. I give this to my husband too, every morning. Cancer thrives in acidic environments I understand, and there's many benefits to keeping your system more alkaline.

I don't get heartburn that much at all anymore like I used to, since I started eating one small tart apple in the evenings, like a Granny Smith or Pink Lady. But when I do, I take put a very small amount of water in a glass and mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in it. Usually, within minutes, I'll belch and the heartburn will be relieved. You have to stay upright for this to work, if you just lie back down in bed before you belch, it's not as effective. Perrier or seltzer water (no salt, sugar....just plain) will also make you burp pretty quickly.

Anytime I might have some gas pains, I take several capsules of Activated Charcoal with a full glass of water, within the hour there is usually relief.

I'll use a clear carbonated soda if my stomach is rumbling. If I have a headache or sniffles I'll also take the meds separately like motrin, tylenol, decongestant etc with the soda. I'll spike with a few drops of lemon or lime juice.

Also if one has stomach issues be careful with peptobismol because it has aspirin in it as well. People take to much which cause irritate and/or cause bleeding ulcers.

Haven't used alka selzer in years and I used it as a hangover cure in my teen years. Never thought to use as a gas reliever. I just have a hot cup of tea and burp and the gas is gone.

Not in many years. I also don't use aspirin and for simple burping, baking soda works great, as does any kind of seltzer. There was a product some friends of used a long time ago called ENO, anyone else remember it?

When I was in college, I considered joining a fraternity. After I gave it a lot of thought, I decided against it. After rush week, the fraternity that I was considering joining held their initiations. The council, as they call it, had the four new members each take three Alka Seltzer tablets dry without water. They broke the tablets up into small pieces and made the boys swallow the pieces without using any water. Immediately after taking the three Alka Seltzers, they each had to chug a 12 oz. bottle of Coke. This was the first time that they pulled this stunt. All three boys were taken to the hospital and as I understand it, the one boy almost died.

The parents of the four boys were enraged. Initially, the President put the fraternity on probation, but when the parents got involved, the President decided to pull their charter for the first semester.
