All The Live long Day...."Now departing on Track Two"!

When I lived in Niagara Falls, I regularly took the Dayliner train to/from Toronto. It was much nicer than taking the Greyhound bus. I miss those trips.

I came to Toronto from Vancouver via train in '67 .. 3 days/nights in coach. That was some trip.
I just came a across this thread, and your post, this morning. In 1984, I took the train across Canada from Edmonton to Halifax. Stopped in Toronto, and went to Montreal and elsewhere in Quebec. It was a writing research trip for me. To make it affordable, I slept in those cozy seats, rather than a sleeper cabin.

I had one of the Via Rail passes that allowed me to get on and off trains over a period of days, including non-stop back to Vancouver. The whole trip was fantastic. Really got to see Canada's varied countryside and a lot of towns & cities en route.

Like you said, Pinky, much nicer than bus travel. And actually, while slower getting from place to place, was way more comfortable than economy air flight.

We have a Caboose Motel a few miles from me:

"Beginning in 1986, we have restored and converted five 1916, N5 cabooses to family size motel rooms and we have been renting them ever since. We were very careful to preserve as much as was possible of the original caboose architecture and structure during the renovation. All cabooses are equipped with a bathroom with shower, seating, cable TV, telephone, two upper berths (original sleepers), one single and one double bed for lower berths.
Four of our cabooses will sleep five people and the fifth will sleep six. There are logbooks placed in each caboose for the express purpose of being written in by our customers. Many travelers have found a great deal of pleasure reading through these logs and contributing their own experiences and feelings to them.
Each room has a volume-controlled speaker that similates the sound of a train in motion, to enhance the effect. Each unit also has controls for A/C and heat."

"On March 1, 1910, high up in the Cascade mountains, winter snows the week before had stalled trains along the Great Northern Railway between Spokane and Seattle. Stranded passengers had hopes that the track would be cleared that day, unaware of the disaster to come. "

Wellington Train Avalanche: 1910

"A tour of the 1910 avalanche debris field at Wellington Washington (Stevens Pass) where 2 trains where swept off the mountain after getting snowed in for days. Hosted by author, historian and photographer Martin Burwash. This video was filmed on October 29, 2011"

"Virgin Trains announced it will be adding the Flying Scotsman to its fleet to pull regular commuter services in a clever April Fools Day prank."

"The unprecedented announcement came from the company this morning via social media, with notice of plans to repaint the historic loco in Virgin’s bright red livery. They also promoted a 25 per cent discount on train tickets for any passengers who help shovel coal on their journey!"

"Hamish Soaring, Head of The Steam Train Rehabilitation Program said: 'At Virgin Trains we’re passionate about giving our customers an awesome experience and think that by bringing steam trains back onto our commuter service, we’re doing just that. We would encourage our customers to book the 25 per cent discounted tickets so we can ensure enough coal is being shoveled at all times'!”
