In those days the department stores were locally owned and those owners lived in the community.

There was always a little less than friendly competition for each store to outshine their competition.

It was the same with many locally owned factories and businesses when it came to donating to various causes, many of our parks, streets, and buildings still bear their names.
 

The first Christmas cards were sold in America in 1847, although Hallmark didn’t sell its first Christmas cards until 1915. Even though the Internet has led to a decrease in snail mail, Christmas remains the biggest card-sending holiday in America. Around 1.2 billion cards are sent each year. This photo was taken in the 1910s when postcards temporarily overtook cards with envelopes in popularity.

Did your family ever get a box of chocolates like a Whitman's sampler or Russell Stover for Christmas? I had to go downtown this morning. While there, I checked in 2 pharmacies and 2 general merchandise stores and none to be found. Of course, I don't need a lot of sweets hanging around, but I like to look at the displays at Christmas - it brings back memories. My mom always like to get a box of Candy Cupboard. I'm not sure they even make that brand anymore. I remember the last time I got them for her. She said the sugar had crystalized and gave the candy a gritty quality. Maybe they had been sitting around for a while.

I liked to give those for Christmas, birthdays, and all kinds of occasions, and have not been able to find them for years. Apparently, like everything else, trends have changed and people no longer give them as gifts.
 
Did or do you have a relative that always wanted something almost impossible to get for Christmas? My maternal grandmother was one. One year she wanted chocolate-covered Brazil nuts. I ended up going to specialty candy stores and got some strange looks when asking for them. Another item she wanted was Friendship Garden perfume. The closest I cam was one out-of-the-way pharmacy where the proprietor said he hadn't
seen that in decades (remember, I am relating this from a 1970s perspective). I think they may have brought it back, at least online says it is made by Shulton. At another time asked for a stationery set and it had to be pink paper.
