Alone with no family at all...can anyone relate?

So true. I've also found that if a new or fairly-new acquaintance asks you what your hobbies are and you don't answer with something really interesting like sky diving or volunteering at archaeological digs, their eyes glaze over and they move on to someone else.
Maybe just say you submit analytics on marketing trends to a consulting firm, then let them wonder what that means.

I dont have any hobbies but Im "interesting" and I collect weird stuff.
Would that count? :D

Seriously. Everybody has something that makes them worth listening to.
But If youre going to drone on and on count me out. :D

Unfotunately, I don't think that's the case. I think there are some people who nobody would want to listen to. On a planet of almost 8 billion, the law of averages dictates that there would have to be at least one person like that and there are probably more than one.
Unfortunately now that I think about it youre probably right. Although sometimes they can be very amusing. :D

One of the perks of being old is Ive been known to lose focus and wander off mid sentence. :D

sometimes I think that wot we've got now is the result of wot we never put enough effort into at the beginning? I came from an extended family structure many years ago which immediately post war disintegrated - I don't think i caused that though - just got bowled over in the rush to get out?

If you find a good option please share it with us.

I’ve been looking too.

In some cities they have volunteer surgery buddies that are available but there is nothing similar in my area.

I’ve also wondered if I could hire a person through an agency for the day of and follow up visits.

I always make a point of asking medical providers but they have little to offer.
I have home health care. Twice a week, for 3-4 hours (more if needed, like for appts). They clean, cook a little, run errands, and take me to and from medical events. It's pretty helpful and not a lot of money. $35/hr. plus mileage charges (varies from company to company). Just do a search for "home health care" agencies.

Wow. $35/hour. That's about the same wage as a certified nurse gets.

After losing most of my family to COVID and my dear husband just recently I was very concerned about living alone. I had really never lived by myself. I learned quickly that getting involved with my senior center (very helpful during my caregiving time), The senior centers are great to for celebrating those new rough holidays like Valentines Day. I found how to get the resources to help for things around the house and for legal isses. And hey, Alexa can give a pretty good conversation now! Seriously though, my dogs and I are learning to fill this house with as much love as we can.

You lonely folks should contact each other. Don't forget that 2 lonely folks could become a couple.

You could also go to your nearest church on Sundays and make friends in one of their Bible Studies.
Thank you for the great idea. Sort of why I came here, to expand my social circle. I have found quite a bit of comfort from my church!

If youre alone do you still celebrate holidays. I do. I decorate the house and making I make good deserts.
For Valentines I made a chocolate cake cause Valentines is a chocolate holiday. For Easter I sometimes make Carrot Cake
and I get a chocolate rabbit so I can bite the ears off. Its tradition.

Im still iffy about St Patrick day. I dont have any traditional recipes for St Pats. Sometimes I do make Watergate Salad.
I saw a recipe for Green Velvet Cupcakes. Maybe with green cream cheese icing? Everything is better with cream cheese icing. :D

If you are okay with alcohol there is a great recipe for Bailey's Cake. Yummy but does have alcohol. I like that idea about the holidays!! I can use any tips I can get!

Im not a big social drinker but Im fine with alcohol. I do have a few boozy cake recipes. Jim Beam and Kahlua. Baileys doesnt sound bad. Ive been perusing my book of decadence. Im kinda leaning toward a Cheesecake now. I have a nice recipe for a small 8x8 one.
And I could make it green :D I had chocolate for Valentines and there will be be more chocolate for Easter.

That was nice, reading all you wrote about how you celebrate. It's a good thing.
But no, I generally do not celebrate holidays alone anymore. I've tried doing it both ways (celebrating and not celebrating) and found that I do better without.

You should do what makes you feel best. I have always liked decorating for the holidays. Mom always let me have free rein.
The husband could care less. He was fine as long as it didnt involve him. And as for deserts. What can I say. Im a first cousin to the Cookie Monster. The husband was always willing to be a taste tester though. Purely for science. :D

I have to limit my deserting to holidays now. I seem to have inherited the baking gene but unfortunately, I have also inherited the fat azz gene. Thats the one thing I hate about getting old. Watching my weight. If I dont keep an eye on it it creeps up and then I have to buy new pants.

I have family - lots but they are always too busy having fun -- heard that somewhere?? - I now honestly believe at holidays and others the oldest head of the family should be celebrated at the head of the table - mark my words they will regret it when I'm gone - great title for a song heh??

I just listened to a TED talk on loneliness. it didn't help much because it was geared toward younger people. There are others, though. It might be better to watch a TED talk on some interest or craft to spark one's creativity or imagination. Then maybe you could join a group of like minded people. Or not. Just wondering.
