Alpine skiing - 24/25, any participants on SF?

After 17 days dealing with sinus head cold virus, skied Tuesday and Wednesday at Heavenly Mtn Ski Resort, ski season days 7 and 8. View Tuesday from top of lift at elevation 9.8k feet with Lake Tahoe beyond. Skied mogul fall lines all day that is like being a metal ball in a pinball machine. Expect to ski many days in February.

Very cool view! And glad you're feeling better.

I'm kinda jealous of the small, skinny guys when it comes to skiing esp in bumps.

Hopefully we get the 24" each of us is expecting.

I worked with a guy whose brother paid for one of those frighteningly expensive week long helicopter powder experiences in BC. When he got back, the guy I worked with asked him if it was worth it. His brother said, "They'll get that from me every year as long as I'm healthy enough to ski."

It's hard for me to imagine that much untouched powder. Of course it's there, but too far out of my reach.

I cat skied for a day at a nearby mtn, despite it being a good time I worried about being the weakest skier holding the rest of the group back. That and a fear of avalanches keep me from heli-skiing.

We had some powder days followed by high pressure which means blue skies and cold temps, down to around -10°F. Ski at 30-60+mph and it's frigid on the face, and calls for an indoor break every 5 or 6 laps. It forces one to make shorter turns to generate warmth and reduce wind chill.

I haven't broken out the heated ski socks yet, but I'm going to consider them. The clothes available today are spectacular in quality (and price) compared to 40 years ago, of course back then being poor we didn't even have those.

It's still below zero°F today, but it's cloudy and gray with another storm rolling in w a prediction of 14" of new snow, hopefully produced while still cold so it produces some light powder instead of hot schmoo.

We had 7" of very light snow overnight, that was deeper in spots as it was very windy. Managed 6 untracked runs as I hit areas that did not open first thing due to avalanche mediation in progress. It was much warmer today than the past few weeks, so I was overheated to say the least.

This is the 2nd biggest week in skiing behind Christmas/New Years so the place was mobbed. Perhaps a rest day tomorrow as I've been hitting skiing pretty hard as well as my normal workouts.

"The Sierra Nevada finally got a big snowfall this week in a winter that has so far been marked by warm storms that have brought more rain and slush than snow to the mountain range. Snowfall totals for Wednesday night to Friday morning ranged from four and a half feet on Mount Rose in Nevada to three feet at Donner Pass in California."

We had a skier death (77yo male) occur a couple weeks ago on a powder day, the cause was either a heart attack or suffocation. This sign recently popped up.

I guy knew through the Forest Service 60 years ago died in a tree well on Big Mountain in Whitefish, Montana. He got turned upside down in a well while skiing deep powder and apparently was in a position where he couldn't dig his way out. It's rare, but it happens. Danny was a few years older than me, but still in his prime.

"The American Alpine skiing star on Sunday won the 100th World Cup race of her storied career, topping the podium in a slalom in Sestriere, Italy, less than a month after she returned from an injury that kept her out of competition for 60 days and slowed her march toward history."

"No other Alpine skier has hit 100 World Cup wins. Shiffrin became the sport’s all-time leader in March 2023, passing Ingemar Stenmark’s previous mark of 86. She’s now tied with Stenmark for the most World Cup podiums in Alpine skiing history (155)."

Welp I'm right around 50 days so far. Trying to physically preserve myself for the remaining month of the season, and our typically phenomenal spring skiing. I have a busy summer coming up and I can not afford a major injury at this point. My daughter is with us so we've been skiing a couple days as a family instead of my usual solo routine.

The World Cup Finals begin Saturday so they are many world class ski racers and their coaches flying about getting a feel for the place. They are incredible!!! Tomorrow training for the downhill starts, one of 4 races; downhill, super giant slalom(aka super G), giant slalom, and slalom.

Tried to post some more pics but it's frustrating as hell.

I believe this is a US Ski Teamer, probably from the 'B' team getting in a little work prior to tomorrow's official practice.

Day #52 today w about 30 days left in the season, projected season total is 75 days. My mantra now is injury avoidance.
