Am I too old to volunteer?

My granddaughter works as a teacher and I would like to go in voluntarily and help her out. Am I too old? How do I apply? I want to get my information in order before I approach her with the idea. I would like to get out of the house for a few mornings.

You may want to consult her first, I'm sure she would know the proper channels to go through to get you in there. And in my opinion you're never to old to volunteer, I still volunteer whenever I here something that interests me, I volunteer at at triathlon every year and it's the time of my life. Also I'm assuming that you'd be working with younger kids, as probably grade 4 and up start to do work and only need one supervisor, you may want to get some medical training, I know where I am you can take CPR classes almost any day of the week.

Most schools have a webpage that addresses their rules as far as volunteering. I would bet there is also an application you can download to fill out for this. As far as I know the only thing that is a must is passing a criminal background check. My son's school encourages volunteers of all ages and have an array of places where you can do so. Our library uses volunteers regularly and I know for a fact that in the younger grades they love to have more mature volunteers and are used for so many jobs.

To me by putting an age restriction on able-bodied volunteers is a mistake. They would be missing out on having someone with life experiences that would surely benefit the students, especially by encouraging them in their studies and by their thirst for learning life history that cannot be learned in a book.

I dont think anyone is too old to volunteer. Most organizations are always in need of whatever help they can get. No matter what age we are, there is always something one can do to help out. I think we should volunteer whenever we get the opportunity to help out!

I have volunteered a lot and the ages range wildly. No one minds at all and organisations are always glad for the help!

You are never too old to volunteer, I volunteer my time at a family shelter that only takes in families with children and abused women.

As others have chimed in, you're never too old. A few years ago I use to volunteer to do citizen patrol in my local city. We were basically security guards with no weapons. We just called the real cops when we saw something suspicious going on. Some days were pretty exciting too.

I have known people in their 90s who do volunteer work. But, I would check with your daughter. Sometimes, with places such as schools, they may need people to be healthy and able, especially around young children. After saying that, I am sure there are things you can do at a school that doesn't require a lot of physical activity, such as reading to children or listening to them read. Definitely approach your daughter with your idea of volunteering at her school!!! Children will greatly benefit to be around senior citizens - don't we have a lot of wisdom to pass on to them? :)

Hi Madge!

I have a friend, who used to teach school, who is now 86. He volunteers for everything! He does assist children with reading at an elementary school.....He helps deliver meals to people, in the building where he lives. He was helping children with disabilities, at a hospital, until it got to be a little too much for him to handle physically. I would say that you just determine what your "capabilities" are.....what you are capable of doing could be your guage? Then go from there! :)

There's a lot of wonderful advice and suggestions here, I don't know what I can add, but at my granddaughter's Elementary school, they love volunteers, they're always looking for them and there's so many great volunteer opportunities that it's amazing. I wish you the best of luck, and please do keep us updated! :D
