I live in America. It is true that a female can be independent, work, love and play as she chooses as long as she is within the law and not hurting anyone right? Has that changed?
 

In America a female can spend her money on things like cruises, clothes and jewelry and not be accused of being frivolous right?

She can do those things freely, but, not to say some person won't verbally accuse her of of being frivolous, since the person saying so has the freedom to speak as they wish even if their words are of a foolish nature depending upon the circumstances.
 
I'm not sure about America but I know that in Australia women are not really free as long as we continue to have such high rates of domestic violence.
One woman per week on average is murdered by a partner or ex in Australia and many, many more live in fear.

Hmmm, you Aussie women need to get guns to defend yourselves.
 
Actually, being stalked by a violent ex husband would give me an incentive to join a rifle club and learn to shoot but it wouldn't really save me. I'd probably be better off feeding him poisoned scones.

Perhaps society would be a lot safer if the women were armed but the men were not.
 
Perhaps free karate lessons could be the answer. One of my nieces has a Black Belt and I am always extremely well behaved in her presence... :D

We've just has the Australia Day awards in the last week. Australian of the Year was awarded to a woman whose son was murdered in front of her at cricket practice by her estranged husband. He then killed himself. The very next day she began campaigning for greater awareness of domestic violence and what it means to live with that kind of fear and worry.

She has already challenged our PM to reverse cuts to programs that are important to helping women escape from domestic violence situations. Sadly, Rosie is now free, but the price has been very high.

This may sound sexist, but don't women share some of the problem by the choices they make in men?
 
No. Wife abusers are capable of being very charming.

I'm just lucky my husband has never been violent towards me or my children because I really didn't know all that much about him when we married, both aged 20.

Also, boys and girls who grow up in homes where domestic violence is present tend to think that it is the norm and the girls tend to blame themselves if they are abused.
 
Hmmm, well, now that they can live together before marriage it would seem that they would see some of this unwanted behavior and get out of the relationship before marrying or having children...
 
I'm not sure that not being married would help, as violent boyfriends and partners is just as common as husbands.I don't know what the OP is talking about, perhaps she will explain?:confused:

I agree, it's not a joking matter and the rates here in the states aren't much different when it comes to domestic violence, we have homes and programs to house and help the many women seeking shelter and escape from such violence. This sort of thing is a world wide issue, not just a problem in any one area of the world. We've had several news stories of pregnant women being murdered by men in the past few years.

This isn't to say that men don't experience domestic violence, but, sticking with the subject broached here for my entry.

Our rates are double that of Australia.:(.2 women every week are killed by a current or former partner in just England and Wales this doesn't include Scotland or Northern Ireland..

Exactly, Oakpple. Once the man considers the woman his property the trouble begins. The most dangerous time is when she decides that she is not, and attempts to leave. She then discovers that she is not free and will not be free for a very long time.

rkunsaw, I've asked rt3 in another post for anecdotes of women defending themselves effectively from violent partners by shooting them in self defence. I'm not talking about murdering them in their sleep but true 'stand your ground' situations when he was coming to murder the woman and/or the kids.

Are such examples commonplace?

Have never lived in fear in Australia, but do take all precautions, as you would anywhere in the world.
(Have been stalked, though, when still young and reasonably attractive).
Now, as an old lady, I'm totally ignored!
Have always been able to do as I please and grateful to Australia for the wonderful "freedom" I've enjoyed. The same goes for many others I've met along the way!
I apologize if I've side-tracked the thread of "domestic violence".
 
No Susie, this thread was about whether or not women are free today. I was the one who hijacked it towards domestic violence then someone else hijacked it again towards self defence using firearms. That's the nature of forums.

With that in mind, I am a lot freer today than I was as a young woman. Part of that is because of advances in society in general and the rest is because I'm also an old lady and nobody even notices what I do. I can go where I want, say what I think and do whatever I please. I wear whatever I fancy too. Germaine Greer called this the age of the crone, when women are truly liberated.
 
I don't think women will be free as long as they think they 'need' a man for survival. Women must make themselves as strong as they can, even if it means learning to defend themselves with a weapon. Martial arts is a good skill to have. You never know when it might come in handy.
