An American Staffordshire terrier similar to this one fatally mauled a baby boy over the weekend.

The breed of dog that fatally mauled a newborn boy in the family home on the NSW Central Coast — the American Staffordshire terrier — ranks the highest in the state for attacks, with almost 900 cases reported within 15 months.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, the five-week-old boy was killed by the family's pet American Staffordshire terrier at Kariong near Gosford, an attack that has shocked the community………

I can't help but to believe the dog was raised improperly.

The Cane Corso, one of the most fearsome of dogs, easily twice the size of a American Staffordshire Terrier, is known for it's loving gentleness and docile, affectionate ways with babies and children.

I believe it's all in the training and raising of these pets, that's what it boils down to.
 
Apparently the 5 week old newborn baby had been left on his own....yes you read correctly....left on his own with the family pet
Where on earth were the parents?? This makes my blood boil 🤬 There are so many young and not so young families who would give their eye teeth for a baby and these 'parents' for want of a better word 🤬 leave their newborn on his own
You need a licence for just about everything these days but any yobbo can become a parent 🤬🤬
Any animal will feel their position usurped when a new baby comes into the home....so keep pets away from the baby
Fav Aussie Vet Dr Harry says to put a screen door on the baby's room so the animal knows the baby is there but baby is safe

Definitely not something I would do, but then again, I know all too well how busy life can get (and does get) as a mom, especially with more than one little one under your watch, and so as the old saying goes, "it only takes a second".

This would see me to my grave, it would be my death sentence if it happened to me.
 
No sane person would leave their infant baby with any family dog. They are all capable of hurting or killing an infant, either intentionally or accidentally. I've met many Staffies and Pit Bulls at the park who were well loved, trained and socialized, friendly with both people, children and dogs. But, even those should not be left alone with a helpless baby, that's just common sense. May the innocent baby rest in peace. :(
 
When my kids were born we already had 2 German Shepards.
When we brought the babies home we made a fuss over the dogs and slowly let them see the new arrivals. If we fed the baby the dog got a pat or a treat. If we kissed the baby they got a smooch also.
Before we brought the babies home my hubby put a screen door on the babies room with a solid bottom and a lock.. That way we could hear the baby if they cried and it kept the dogs and the cat out of the room while they slept.

Many Pit Bull owners are determined to prove that their Pit Bull is different, smarter, better trained, more gentle & that Pit Bulls get a bad rap. They'll post cute photos & videos of their dog sleeping with their babies, kittens, chickens, etc. They aren't smart enough to realize that their photos & videos only capture the present - not the future.

And, yes - NO child should be left alone with ANY dog or cat. 40 years ago, I was in the ER getting my arm stitched from an accident with a window. A child was brought in covered in blood. I asked the nurse what happened. She said "Their family cat attacked the child & he'll need at least 50 stitches - mostly on his face.
 
In a separate incident, police said, the same animal responsible for killing the baby had attacked and killed a neighbour's dog four weeks ago.

Central Coast Council confirmed that last month's attack had been registered, and said "the family was undertaking a breed and temperament assessment" at council's request.

The same dog attacked and killed a neighbor's dog a month before, and they still allowed it to be around their baby? WTF? :eek: The parents should be tried for murder. They knew of the danger.
 
I think it's the backyard breeders who are the problem when suddenly a breed becomes very popular and people discover a new source of income (some breeds are selling for thousands of dollars), and that's where the problem lies, the breed becomes lost with interior breeding. Reputable breeders are expensive but necessary IMO.
