September I want to take a train from Syracuse NY-Atlanta Ga round trip. On Amtrak website I can make reservations from Syracuse to Atlanta, however, for reservation to return from Atlanta-Syracuse is not available. I spoke to Amtrak yesterday that a train from Atlanta to Syracuse departs after 11:00pm, but I prefer departure from Atlanta not that late at night.

I'll look at departure and return stations within driving distance. The Amtrak trip planning website does not offer alternate train routes and therefore very limited in its capabilities. It is best to talk to an Amtrak customer service representative for the bigger picture.
 

Mr. Ed, I would take a small trip on Amtrak before I'd commit to that long trip to see how much you like it. My brother claimed he would not ever fly, and took Amtrak. It was not a happy trip. When it rains trains do not move, and they may not move for many hours. My brother is still terrified of flying, but would get on a plane rather than on another train.
 
We’ve already traveled to Atlanta and back on Amtrak, our only complaint was not traveling in a sleeper car. Amtrak offers a bedroom car that sleeps 2
 

My experience with Amtrak has been mixed. When it works I do enjoy travel by train, but it doesn't always work.

My biggest frustration is the limited service and finding a train that goes when and where I want to go, usually impossible.

I've booked a sleeper twice, the first time it was great, very comfortable. The second time they apparently took the sleeper car off the train and I had to spend the night in a seat, got no notice until I tried to board...
