There is always The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin, an even longer train, the journey is only 3000km and 3 days but still expensive.

I have driven it a few times but never been by train.

The big problem with trains in Australia is the different gauges in the various states.

For example NSW is standard gauge, Victoria is broad gauge while Queensland is narrow gauge, SA had several gauges. WA - no clue. The NT didn't have a railway. That's colonisation for you.

Until relatively recently you had to change trains at the state borders

The longest train ride I have been on is the Trans Siberian from Moscow to Vladivostok. 9000KM. The most memorable one as a couple was a birthday trip for my wife on the Coast Starlight from Seattle to LA. We were in a private rail car with only 8 passengers.
The most complicated trip we took was from Wengen in the Swiss Bernese Alps to Monte Carlo. It involved changing trains 5 times at Lauterbrunnen, Interlaken, Basel, Geneva, and Marseille. We booked First Class, and it was very comfortable.
