An Idea That Would Benefit Gun Control and Dogs Together

Just a thought while I was walking. A dream nonprofit...if there were a bunch of rescue groups that could do a gun buyback program. Turn in your weapon and in exchange get a big lovable mutt...neutered with all shots and basic training. Many of the dogs euthanized in the US die only because they are adults and a medium to big breed. Perfectly healthy Rotties, Bullies, German Shepherds, Dobermans...all effective security dogs just on looks alone.

Of course the family would have to be screened. None of that tying the poor pooch out in the yard day and night. It would be taken in as a pet with regular follow ups by the rescue group. The surrendered weapons could be disposed of by law enforcement. Also to make sure people don't surrender a weapon, get a dog and go out and get more guns some kind of data base that if you get a dog through the program you surrender your gun permit for the life of the dog.

Of course some gun lovers would be totally inappropriate to be dog owners. But it would be about weeding those people out somehow. I dunno, I can dream can't I?

Great idea! We are gun owners and very, very responsible and careful with them. My hubby and I also have concealed-carry permits.

I spent only $60 on my precious Lilly, an 82-pound Boxer/German Shepherd mix. She's 8 years old and a love.

I have a gun that's giving me some problems. I'd gladly give it up for another big dog!! Lilly would probably love it, since she's surrounded by 8 cats.

It would be good for people who aren't really enthusiastic about gun ownership. If they could be convinced that sure having a weapon in the house can make you feel safe. Having a great big happy dog can make you feel even safer. For some people it would be a terrific compromise. Besides if there was a break-in my Callie can move a heck of a lot faster than I could ever shoot...want to see a robber break back out of the house? " Officer please, please, put me in the car...Yes I did it, I robbed every house on this block then there was this, this dog and please dear gawd don't let him get me!"

LOL! My neighbor has a Rottweiler and a pit bull. I call her before going over there.

Being a doggie snack wasn't something I wanted to grow up to be.
