An Inquiring Mind Wants To Know Is There Anything Good On Netflix or Prime?

Is there anything on Netflix or Prime that is worth watching. I find that looking for something to watch overwhelming, wading through what seems an endless menu of programs on their sites. I'm interested in any of the movie/tv genres.

"Our National Parks" is an excellent 5-part documentary narrated by Pres. Obama. It features national parks in several countries. If you think it is just a nature film, think again. The narratives and accompanying music are excellent. The up-to-date cameras techniques are the best I've seen. The birds and animals featured and their stories are some I've never seen or heard. You'll get hooked on it like I did.

The Obamas' film company called Higher Ground is under contract to Netflix to make several films.

Thanks Ruby. I'll have to check that out.

A lot depends on what sort of things you like, define as 'worth watching'. Whether your tastes are narrow or broad. I have very eclectic tastes, but i also have to take my mental state into consideration. Sometimes i can watch realistically depicted dystopian themes (whether documentary or fiction) with impunity, other times i have to insulate myself, refrain from 'going there'.

What i sometimes find helpful is the YouTube channel Flick Connection. He does compilations, ranked lists about various genres on various streaming outlets. What i like about him is he acknowledges his personal tastes color his choices, but he's aware others have and, most importantly, usually gives enough details about style and tone of things for me to know which action or scifi movies i should skip and which i'll enjoy. He has young kids so he's aware and mentions if he thinks something 'too intense' for younger ones.

I did in my post "I'm interested in any of the movie/tv genres."

There is little that interests me either. I like documentaries and biographical if they are based on fact. "Evelyn" with Pierce Brosman was pretty good (Netflix I believe) as was "Red Joan" with Judi Dench.

I stopped enjoying fairy tales/vampires/sci-fi/super heroes when I grew up and I never liked scripted reality shows, excessive vulgarity, flash bag car chases or stupidly unrealistic situations which leaves little else.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Queen's Gambit, a story about chess. I also liked Don't Look Up. But you're right; There's a lot of not so interesting filler in the menu, and movies repeat so much in one genre or another or even several, that menu surfing is annoying. I only stuck with Netflix for a couple of months, and I'm not streaming now. I'll maybe sign up for Showtime later, so I can see the latest addition to the Dexter series, and see what else is there.

I didn't stream anything for years, and spent what I saved on quite an extensive library of films and series. OK, more than I would on streaming, but I have a more enjoyable selection in my private stock of favorites.

Thanks for the suggestions Helen.

Thanks feywon. I bookmarked the Flick Connection UTube channel

On Amazon Prime:
Pretty Hard Cases, a Canadian, female buddy, comedy, cop series; pretty good, the 2 gals playing the 2 cops are excellent.
The Wilds; just heard it's been renewed for Season 2, yay! Might be more of a "chick" show, IDK, but the acting is so good!

On Netflix:
Space Force; unfortunately cancelled after only 2 seasons; we really liked it.
Lincoln Lawyer; have only watched 1 episode so far so still not sure about it.
And of course, we're finishing up Better Call Saul; it's odd, neither one of us liked Breaking Bad but we really like Saul, go figure.

Thanks. My list is getting longer. (y)

An excellent western. = Open Range staring Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall.
And one of the best films ever made. = The Shawshank Redemption.

I agree with all of these.
Disappointed to learn Space Force is cancelled.
Lincoln Lawyer because I read Michael Connelly’s books. JMO, casting wasn’t the best. Not much blood & gore for a murder mystery.
Saul - lots of blood & gore. Still really like it, as long as I watch it early in the evening.

I'll have to check these out, @helenbacque . Thanks. Big fan of Pierce Brosman.

I love "Better Call Saul" but I watch it on AMC . I pay for cable and I feel like that's enough, so I haven't bought Amazon Prime or Netflix or cable extras like HBO. TCM is my favorite thing for movies, but it comes in my cable package.

I did watch Netflix online for a "free trial month" last year and enjoyed "The Queens Gambit," and "The Sapphires" very much, as well as a dozen other things, but by the end of my free month I had seen everything I was interested in.

I had PBS "passport" for a year because I had donated $60. That was very disappointing. I thought they would have all the old Masterpiece shows I had watched, but most of them belong to the BBC and were just rented for the on air duration.

What a watch online a lot and really enjoy is Tubi. It's free, but the movies have commercials. I don't mind that.

I have Netflix and Prime and seem to be having trouble finding anything I want to watch lately. If you don’t mind using closed captioning try doing what I’m currently doing - watching foreign films.
I loved the series Midnight Diner set in Tokyo. Currently watching Our Blues set on Jeju Island.

Also I’ve found I really prefer a lot of British series; both comedy and detective series. Some are old but still good . New Tricks, Last Tango in Halifax, Call the Midwife , the Durrells in Corfu, Doc Martin, The Detectorists. Almost any series that original aired on PBS is worth watching.
Peaky Blinders - in English but you’re going to need closed captioning.

Back on American soil - Longmire is good. I like Better Call Saul but I don’t think I’d like it if I hadn’t already watched Breaking Bad. Some series I liked initially but then they just went on too long - Outlander for example.

I resisted watching Stranger Things but then got into it; another one that’s going to drag on too long. Ozark is good but ready for it to wind up.

Schitts Creek -almost stopped watching but stuck with it and came to care about the characters.

The Kominsky Method I liked because it is aimed toward older adults.

Rather than sift through thousands of movies and shows on Netflix's channel, I use my computer to search "What's good on Netflix" or "What's new on Netflix" and I get a neat, fairly compact list.

I enjoy old movies & tv shows. Amazon Prime has some interesting channels anyone can subscribe to.
Screenpix, Starzz, freevee, Paramount, amc, Showtime, Cinemax, Hallmark Movies, epix, MovieSphere, best westerns, best tv ever, magnolia, shout tv, and much more.
