I am shocked, the first of the fireworks shows have began in my area, I think it is too early. I enjpy it but me dogs do not. The next few days will be rough for all animals, domestic or wild. Why do we think that is okay? What about the parents that have babies or
small children that are frightened by all the loud noise. What about the chances of fire to home and property.

While the bombs bursting in air are beautiful that is not really what the 4th of july is about. It is to celebrate when we recieved our freedom to become our own country, to honor all of those that put their lives in danger to afford that right. We do not need fireworks, that is just a thing that reminds me that many brave men gave their lives to make out country. We should not celebrate in this way. It should be about a community coming together honoring those who worked and died to give us the right to be Americans
 

I enjoy the professional fireworks displays that have a definite beginning and end.

I'm not a fan of the 'hold my beer' crowd in the neighborhood that set them off at all hours of the day and night for several days.

I don't mind going, I enjoy the fireworks but i just can't take the heat anymore. My town does a big thing that last all day long. There is live music, that I can hear when I go outside. Food vendors, entertainment for the kids. It is really nice, I am just old to tolerate being out in the heat but we used to go when my son was little. Now that I have 3 dogs that don't like it and freak out I would never leave them alone.
 
Around here, it can be hard to distinguish who’s setting off firecrackers and who’s shooting at groundhogs. It’s also bad on New Year’s Eve when guns (too many of them) are fired into the air In “celebration.” Only in America… 🙀
 
It's the same here. We have fireworks which start early December for Christmas and go on past New Year. Same with Halloween... but the worst of all is Guy Fawkes Night which is the traditional fireworks night.

When I was a child, fireworks were celebrated on the night of the 5th of November, there would be a big Bonfire, and people would set off fireworks at the site of the bonfire, in a park where everyone in the neighbourhood gathered.. and the children would be given sparklers to hold..

Nowadays it's a multi billion pound business, and people party in their own gardens with extremely expensive and VERY loud fireworks for a week or more before and after the 5th of November.. the animals are terrified.

There should be a law preventing individuals from buying fireworks... or allowing them to beset off on private land unless that land is a good distance from another property

Guy Fawkes was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who was involved in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 against the Government and the King .

Fawkes and his surviving co-conspirators, Thomas Wintour, Ambrose Rookwood and Robert Keyes were committed, tried and sentenced to the act of treason.

Their fate was grisly. On 31 January 1606, they were dragged behind a horse along the streets of London to Westminster Yard where, one by one, they were hanged, drawn and quartered.
In January 1606 James I passed a thanksgiving act to celebrate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot and his deliverance from danger.

Called the Observance of 5 November Act 1605, it involved a special church service, bonfires and fireworks.

It remained in force until 1859 although celebrations still take place today.

Every 5 November in Britain on Guy Fawkes Day, we remember the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and fellow Catholic conspirators attempted to blow up Parliament and assassinate James Ist

Since then we burn the ''Guy '' which is an effigy of Guy Fawkes, on top of the Pyre.. and set off Fireworks to celebrate his death

No,they can do that any night they like.

  • Guy Fawkes was born in York in 1570.
  • Some of his school friends were also involved in the Gunpowder Plot.
  • He became a Catholic and fought for the Spanish army.
  • In November 1605 he and a group of plotters tried to blow up Parliament and King James I. They used 36 barrels of gunpowder.
  • Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars with the gunpowder and arrested.
  • He was sent to the Tower of London, put on trial and executed.
  • Bonfire night is on the 5th November every year. It remembers Guy Fawkes and the failed Gunpowder Plot.

Where I live, there are all kinds of rules and regs about fireworks, but no one pays any attention. No fireworks after 10:00 pm - ignored. No fireworks set off within 200 feet of a structure - ignored. Call the authorities to enforce - ignored. This time of year brings out all the complaints, almost verbatim from the previous years. On the Next Door app, it's like someone cut and pasted all the comments from the previous year.

Actually, this year we have a burning ban going on because it's been so dry. But people are ignoring the ban and still setting off fireworks.

I'm in the camp of no fireworks except on the 4th up til 10pm. That's enough to show patriotism and still be mindful of those with pets, PTSD, or early risers.

It must be hard to be British and remember all the historic dates when the history goes back so many years. It's much easier being American and only having to remember from a much earlier time. :)
 
My dachshund doesn't mind the fireworks, but she fears nothing but the toenail clippers.

A few years ago, on the fourth of July, we had a gigantic malamute for about 24 hours due to fireworks panic.
I saw him circling the inside of my neighbor's fenced in backyard, disoriented and not quite finding the opening.

I took him home with me gave him food and water and tried to call the pound in case anyone had reported him missing. They were closed for the holiday of course.

We loved him, but he really didn't like us very much, he wanted his owner. When my son drove up and walked toward where we were on the porch he ran to him in excitement and then, when he realized he wasn't the right guy he threw his head back and howled with grief. It was heartbreaking.

It was all worked out the next day but so sad while it lasted. I hate fireworks.

Me, too. There are fireworks displays at the river and a historic state park near where I live. The ones in town at the ball park are also cool. Those I enjoy. I don't enjoy the neighborhood bozos who randomly shoot them off for days and scare the crap outta me. 🎆
