Angry Sea Lion Chase

When I wintered on my boat in Petersburg, Alaska, there was a sea lion that hung out in the harbor. On my dock there was a boat where a couple of fisherman would cut loads of bait and throw the head and guts in the water. Technically, that is not legal, and there were signs posted not to do that, but it was Alaska. The sea lion would hang out next to the boat and feed off the fish guts.

One day I had to walk past him on the way to my boat. If you walked by quickly, I guess it was OK, but I stopped to watch him, and he didn't like that. While in the water, he lunged at me with half his body above water and roared. It was frightening how fast he was in the water too, but he stopped short with his head just on the dock. Sea lions don't bark like seals. They actually roar, like lions. I got out of there fast, but he was content to just make sure I left while he was feeding. The locals called him Wally. He was a big guy and chased the other sea lions out of the harbor, which he considered his territory.

Those guys in the video were stupid to egg that sea lion on. It's like they were trying to make their own Jackass Movie. Sea lions are a far cry from the tame seals that you can hand feed at sea world. A totally different animal, and they are wild and can move much faster out of the water than the one in the video. But people feed bears in Yellowstone Park and think it's all fun and games. But what are you gonna do?
