Anone familiar with researching Pearl Harbor ships and sailors?

My father was at the bombing of Pearl on the Tangier which was attached to the Utah as a supply ship. The Utah got hit bad enough to roll over and become useless, however the Tangier fired at the planes. Have any of you reserched Pearl enough to tell me where to find the roll for the Tangier? I know my father left the Tangier on the one trip made to CA after the bombing but not sure where he went next. Thanks!!

Contact the Navy, they will tell you who you can contact to get a comprehensive report on where your dad was stationed. Like any government operations, this process will be complex, and many will give you a runaround. But they have the information you just have to find the person responsible for giving relatives the information when asked.

Ancestry.com has Navy muster rolls for that time period. You have to pay $ though. I used it for USMC rolls. Learned all kinds of things about my grandfather that he never told us - he spent almost a week in a field hospital with “Spanish flu” in Sept 1918, and that he had served in Nicaragua before the US entered WW1.

Since I do geneology I thoght I could tackle this but it was really difficult. Finally after many attempts to the wrong places, I did find the path of the Tangier until it's de- commissioning. I needed to prove my father was at a certain plce at a certin time and I was successfull.

Thanks, everyone, for all your suggestions.

This is interesting because I read that many of the records were destroyed between 1912 and 1960 for the military.
I checked with the DOD and they referred me back to the National Archives who said that mainly Army and Air Force records were destroyed, but if I knew of someone looking for a relative’s records to tell them to try regardless of the records loss. There were some recovered, so it’s worth a try.

Thanks, TT for bringing up the subject.

I appreciate the link and looked up my dad’s record but it wasn’t there. He was in the army.

Dang, sorry about that. I “think” you may be able to contact the VA eBenefits portal in the county or state veterans agency. If they can’t help, they may be able to guide you in a different direction.
