On this past Sunday evening at 8:30 p.m., a state trooper by the name of Corporal Timothy O’Connor, Jr., was shot and killed by a driver he had stopped for erratic driving. The Trooper, after making the stop, approached the vehicle’s driver’s side when the driver suddenly opened the door and fired at the Trooper and killing him. The driver then took a few steps back and killed himself.

The Trooper leaves a wife and a 6 y/o daughter. The funeral is next Wednesday, 3/18. I plan on attending.

Yes and it has had an effect on recruiting. We are looking to hire 1000 new Cadets.
We receive a lot of applications since dropping the need for a college degree, but meeting the qualifications has been troubling.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are also looking at adding about a thousand new graduates from the Regina Depot training college in this year of 2026. That program is a 26 week course. For their first year of uniform duties the RCMP rookies ride every shift with a Coach Officer, then they go back to Depot for a further 26 weeks of additional training. A full year of education and physical training.

The Ontario Provincial Police are also looking to add 650 new officers in 2026. JIMB>

Normally, we do 28 weeks of training. Both women and men follow the same course of training, which includes; paramilitary-style training, rigorous physical conditioning (running, boxing, defensive tactics), academic coursework on PA crimes/vehicle codes, legal principles, firearms proficiency and specialized equipment training. Also included is how to handle evidence at a crime scene and driving techniques.
After graduation, the new Trooper will ride along with an FTO. All of the Cadets must live at the Academy for the length of their training.

Most police departments in PA are in need of Officers.

Police recruitment is tough all over because of the way police in general have been portrayed in the media, treated in the courts and by politicians & commentators. Last century many departments got more applicants than they knew what to do with anytime there openings and civil service tests.

Also while searching this murder I'm coming across social media posts saying the killer's actions reflect his online views & activity. Many local news outlets are focusing on the officer which is good but are doing little follow up on the suspect.
