Name the first song to use the phrase "heavy metal " in the lyrics ? What band played it ? Hint... their previous name was Sparrow, and they were based in Toronto. Any one know ? JIMB.

With the line "heavy metal thunder," this became the first popular song to use the phrase "heavy metal," which became a term for hard rock. William Burroughs is credited with coining the phrase, as he used it in his 1961 novel The Soft Machine, describing his character Uranian Willy as "the Heavy Metal Kid." Burroughs told The Paris Review: "I felt that heavy metal was sort of the ultimate expression of addiction, that there's something actually metallic in addiction, that the final stage reached is not so much vegetable as mineral."

Winner. John Kay came to Canada from Germany at age 8 living in Toronto. He was the front man for both Sparrow and Steppenwolf. JIMB.

For a brief time Joe was the bass player and Jimi was the lead guitar player with a New Jersey band called Joey D and The Starlighters, whose biggest hit was The Peppermint Twist. At that time Jimi was known as Jimmy James. Over the years Joe Pesci has released a number of albums of his own compositions, with him singing. JIMB.

Ah, interesting! I'm not familiar with Peppermint Twist... at least I don't think so, but now Chubby Checkers' Twist is in my head. 💃🕺
 
I knew Joey Dee. He was a client of my father's. Me and my best friend, we were in 5th grade, got to meet him. We girls were thrilled! He was very nice. I think, not sure, Joey Dee does radio in Florida.
 
Peppermint Lounge, 45th St. Midtown. I couldn't wait to be sixteen to get in there! Probably had to be 18, though, the drinking age? All I knew is, I wanted to be 16!
