Another "What the Heck???"

I think I'm in Florida, but I'm not sure any more.
I just came across this story on my Google home page:

A woman sued Geico because, while having a....um....romantic interlude....with a fellow in his car, he infected her with a sexually-transmitted disease he didn't confess to having.

Because it happened in his car, she sued his insurer, Geico. The case went to mediation and was found in her favor. Geico had to settle for an undisclosed sum because she was "injured" in his car.

OK, beat that one!
 

Can't believe the all powerful GEICO...
would have given in(up) to such an egrocious claim.🙄
 
Hard as it is to believe , I heard that on talk radio this morning. As per a call in doctor , he could have had the infection and not even known it ! He [the doc] even said thet the virus/infection could have been left behind .... by a previous encounter in the car. She sued for and was awarded 5.2 million dollars ?

Right or wrong ? I don't even have an opinion <grin> I just do not understand where the auto insurance comes in. Another caller, [an attorney] said that if it had gone to "court" it likely would have been dismissed without decision. But since it was an arbitrator it ended as it did.

Those stories are fun to read. But the vast majority of the time, it is just some fun byline for a reporter and the actual story behind the case is far different.

There was the case of the woman who sued McDonald's for spilling hot coffee. Case was far more involved and she was seriously injured, taken to the hospital, could have actually been fatal.

"The plaintiff, Stella Liebeck, a 79-year-old woman, suffered third-degree burns in her pelvic region when she accidentally spilled coffee in her lap after purchasing it from a McDonald's restaurant. She was hospitalized for eight days while undergoing skin grafting, followed by two years of medical treatment."

I got coffee from McDonald's not too long ago. Coffee cups they use are extremely cheap, not strong enough. I came close to spilling mine...and that coffee is just much hotter than what you get from Dunkin Donuts or other places. They really need to change that all up...stronger cups that don't easily spill and much cooler coffee...

And also, these stories are pushed into the media, in order to create a climate where the public wants to place limits on lawsuits.

And the reason that is the case, is that major corporations want the freedom to do horrible things to the public, without being held accountable financially for the horrible things they do.

So, make fun of an old lady who almost died, so that when you poison a stream and kill a few kids with cancer, the parents of the dead kids can't sue you for too much.

And that is the way it goes. The rich act as bullies to the rest of us, trying to get their way. And that way is as much money as they can possibly make, with as few limits of safety and responsibility, as possible.

I buy coffee almost everyday from McDonalds and have never had an issue. First of all, I go inside and order my coffee, which is half regular and half decaf. Then I go over to the soda dispenser, empty out about a half inch of coffee and add ice. Stir and drink. Sometimes, I will ask for a cup sleeve. If I go to the window, I always ask for a sleeve or will take my own mug with a lid if I remember it.

But you are right. The cups are hot.

sure. you figured out how to manage it. But it's their responsibility to deliver a product that we don't have to manage, in order for it to be safe.

I think that is why Dunkin Donuts goes with those styrofoam cups. The heat never gets through them. Plus they are thicker, lid is on stronger...just not a problem.

I am sure McDonald's has enough money to do the same.

And that is the thing I don't get...why not just spend the extra few pennies and do what Dunkin Donuts does?

How much money could they possibly save by using a cheaper cup?

I don't get people, I really don't.

If some older woman is struggling with a heavier door, I will go over to help. Why not? Takes 20 or 30 seconds out of my day. It's not like I have to spend hours and hours of my time to help.

What is the big deal about making a couple of changes, so people are safe?

What is it in human nature that absolutely refuses to budge, even over very very very minor things?
 
Have you suggested using stronger cups to corporate? If you do, a reason should be included. I found that writing letters to corporate and include the reasoning for the letter will get a person further than if they write and complain.

I wrote a letter to Coke one time and told them that they put the caps on their bottles too tight. I asked the person that read the letter if they would hand an older person over 75 a bottle of their Seagrams Ginger Ale and ask them to open it. Weeks later, I did get a letter back stating that they would have the production staff reduce the tightness of the caps, which never came about. I did get four (4) coupons for four (4) carriers of any Coke product. I didn’t win the battle or the war, but I got some free soda out of it, which we only use the mixers.
 
People need to wear clothes, I have seen some women wearing next to no clothes and underware. When they are sitting their buts on car seats, chairs, it is no wonder they can catch infections. The same goes for some men also.

I know part of the problem. Back in the 80s, McDonald's was approached by the environmental activists, to reduce the volume of the waste they produced. Unlike many interactions, McDonald's basically completely agreed with the environmental activists and made all the changes they suggested.

That is part of the reason that the cup is so thin..and made of paper and not styrofoam.
