Any Big 10 Football Fans?

There's a good game on tonight between Indiana University (rated #2) and Ohio State University (rated #1) at 7pm. I'm ordinarily a Purdue fan but an IU fan when they're not playing Purdue. I'm real excited for IU tonight because the past several years they've had some awful football teams but they're doing great this year. I hope they can pull it off tonight!

I just wanted to see a good game and it was all that. Too bad one team had to lose, but lots of playing left to do with the playoffs coming. Hats off to the Big for a great game.

Earlier today, my Alabama Crimson Tide lost to the Georgia Bulldogs although they beat Georgia during the regular season, Georgia completely dominated in the SEC championship game today. I will be kind of surprised if Alabama is selected for the playoffs. We'll find out tomorrow.

I am hoping this loss by OSU gets them riled up for the CFP. The team shouldn’t put all the blame on their field goal kicker, Fielding. OSU’s missed opportunity in the 3rd quarter around the 5 yard line with 4th and 1 should also be included as part of their defeat. Originally, the ball was spotted for a first down, but the replay showed it was a bad spot, which moved the ball back and OSU turned the ball over on downs. Congratulations to IU.

I played football in high school and 1 year at the Naval Academy. I was a kicker, but couldn’t compete with the other 2 kickers. I was only reaching around 45 yard kicks consistently through the uprights while the other 2 kickers were kicking in the 50’s+. They definitely had more leg and a stronger leg than I did. I did very well in high school and won some games for my team, so I am proud of that accomplishment. Kicking the ball through the uprights is harder than it looks. I started kicking when I was 13 in junior high school. I hit the gym most everyday trying to strengthen my leg. It was definitely ā€œfun,ā€ which it’s supposed to be in high school. I would do it all over again.

I remember, maybe 40 years ago in a big "grudge game" between two of a state's universities, the kicker for one of them (darned if I can remember which one), missed a field goal that would have won the game in the last seconds.

As he walked dejectedly off the field, his teammates were patting him and comforting him.

The next year, same game, same kicker, same down-to-the-last-minute-kick situation. He misses it again.

This time, he walks off the field alone.

There’s nothing worse than for a kicker to miss a field goal to tie or win a game during the closing seconds. His teammates may be upset with him, but the kicker is probably punishing himself more than they could do. I have been there. It hurts bad when you let your team down. It hurts really bad.

Just curious, but how long is your farthest field goal?

I don't know a thing about football, but I live about 40 minutes from the OSU stadium so I can "feel" the wins and losses through the town atmosphere. There will be no joy in Mudville today.
I have a lot of relatives living in Ohio and many of them talk about OSU football. I went to only one game there before the stadium was expanded and they played Michigan or UM. I think it was UM because I had an opportunity to meet Bo Schembechler. My uncle had played and graduated from UM. He was a 6 feet 3 inch MLB.

Later, about 1985 in and/or around that year, University of Michigan held an all years alumni celebration, which included coaches and players from all years prior. I went along with my aunt and uncle to visit and met some of the best players at that time. I can’t remember the names. Botold stories of old games and of course, his mixing with Woody Hayes. They played some great games back then. UM against OSU was one of the best rivalries played at that time.

Poor old Woody. Sad that such a great coach had to make his exit that way.

I was watching a game last year and noticed that the coach had a large belt on that had a handle on the back. There was a staff member who was literally glued on his back at all times with a hand on that handle, to keep him from running out (or toward a ref) and pulling a penalty.

That’s insane. 😜😜 I never heard that before, but if it works and keeps the coach on the sidelines, then use it.
