Any Knowledge of Quora

Quora was recommended to me as an interesting site. I couldn’t read anything without joining but was sent a link to read a question by another person that I’ve known for a long time. It said I could use a private email but when it wanted me to put in a password, I left. It sent an email to the joint email for my husband and me. The address of the sender was just iCloud and it used my full real name in the email.

What the heck is this site? How do I destroy any relationship with this site?

Editing to add: All is good. It was my Apple account that created the Hidden email Account.

This is a copy of the email I received. I’ve cut out links and replaced some things with italics.

iCloud (was the address of the sender)

Hide My Email was used with quoradotcom

Dear real name

You created a unique, random email address for quora.com on February 10, 2022.

Messages sent to this address will forward to your inbox. You can turn it off at any time.

Address:

The made up email it created @icloud.com

To look up this address or manage its settings, go to iclouddotsettings on your device or on the web.

It sounds to me as though someone has given them your personal details. Perhaps the friend who recommended the site? I know cookies pick up details from your device, that could be where they got your e-mail. This is why I browse in guest mode.

The person doesn’t know my personal details. This was Quora that was doing the tracking.

It's a question and answer site, like Yahoo's AskMe. It's based in Calif. There should be some fine print way down at the bottom of the email saying "click here to unsubscribe."

It’s ok. It was me having a panic attack. It was actually iCloud that created a false email. It’s a service they offer.

I Cloud keeps a record on what you deliberately send to them so that you will never lose photos, etc. It consists of what you choose to save.

I’m a member of Quora, where you can pursue personal interests on topics such as history, psychology, famous people, movies, comics, or whatever by reading questions posed by members and the answers received to them. Some of the knowledge shared by members is in-depth, personal, or unique, so it can be a learning experience. I’ve had thousands of people read my answers to questions I’ve felt qualified to comment on.

Quora does operate somewhat differently from other forum sites, and doesn’t permit “user names” but rather insists on real names, something I find unacceptable due to privacy concerns…so I use a name there that’s a play or variant on my actual name! The bottom line is that Quora I find different, informational, and unique, but just be careful there, as you would on any such site….

Nothing more than a concise search & rendering site. Advertised as a better Google. What could be easier than having a real name attached to all your inquiries and searches. Information is power & a valuable resource for advertisers.

Does anyone here use their real name? I wouldn’t because it’s unique enough to be searchable. I might consider checking Quora out later, but it would be with a variant of my name.
