Any of you develop skin sensitivities as you aged?

I know it’s a weird question 😖

Wondering if it’s possible to develop sensory issues at an older age because I’m struggling. No change in detergents, lotions, anything that’s on my skin, so so knownthera not the problem.

have been struggling this past few weeks with clothes and shoes that have been my go to, my staples in my wardrobe, but now something about them is driving me crazy. Even socks! I’m changing my outfit two or three times. This morning I changed into four separate pairs of socks and three separate pairs of shoes trying to feel comfortable.😱 Feel like I’m going crazy!! 🤪😂

Anyone else had this?

But, what has changed in your life? That may be the cause.

My mom died in March of this year. I cared for her and lived with her for the previous 17 years. My days were often crowded with caring duties or household chores that required immediate and constant attention. Now, with her gone I have loads of down time. I've noticed several maladies, itches, and twitches that did not occupy me before. Were they always there, but ignored? Or are they just tricks by my mind to keep me occupied? I actually don't know. But, what I do know is that when I'm away from home and fully occupied by my activity all these little twitches and itches are gone. Surprising, isn't it?

A couple of weeks ago, it felt like my skin was burning. At the time my husband was adding grout between our ceramics. Afterwards you are meant to put a finish over top. It can burn skin. Well I felt like I was rolled in that stuff. My skin was burning. Shingles came to mind but I’m ok now. It lasted for about 4 to 5 days. After burning it got really itchy.
Really really strange. I’ve never felt anything like that in my life.

Years ago I switched to unscented soaps for everything after I had an issue with an itch on my ankle. Doctor gave me a cream & old me to use Dreft baby detergent & it stopped. I couldn't stand the smell & switched to fragrance free detergent. It was the only time I had a issue. Over the next few years I started to find unscented lotions. Then I went a step further & looked for things made for eczema & sensitive skin, etc. because they are completely scent free.

The one thing you need to watch on "unscented" is that some companies will use scents to make it "unscented". Doesn't make sense, but the sensivtive skin products usually don't do that.

Even if you are using the same products, they may have changed the formula in some way. They may not have to put changes on the label if they do that.

I've spoken before about a skin rash I've had for several years now, it just won't go away, and all the creams etc that I've bought, some script but many not, have not made any difference.....but to look on the brite side I have something
no one else has !!!!! ;)

Are you taking medications? Did you change your medications recently?
A change in your diet or in your activities? A new pet?
I have noticed that my skin is getting very sensitive and very dry with age, including my scalp. I am also developed allergies to pollen but that is about it. It is quite manageable.
I hope you find the cause and feel better very soon.

I once had a skin rash that the dermatologist, nor the laboratory could identify, it eventually went away. It left me very puzzled!
Well hawkdon, you are "unique"! 😉

It's possible to develop allergic reactions through time to products that never caused an issue prior, even for decades.

I developed an allergy to aloe vera oil over a few years of once a week use and a buddy of mine, an AVID fisherman, developed an allergy to the cork used to make the rod handles. I'm fine w not using aloe vera oil and my buddy used tennis racket handle tape to cover the cork and he's good to go.

Before it was diagnosed 18 months ago, my thick blood condition (polycythemia vera) was causing minor itching, especially after hot showers. The actual surface of my skin was not itchy but rather deeper. Also would change every few seconds between areas feeling itchy. I'm normally just allergic to poison oak. After diagnosis and treatment, itching episodes went away. Though minor, the itching was enough to make going to sleep difficult.

Occasionally over the last few months, have had periods where I felt a bit different deep internal itching like tiny pins and needles on minor areas of legs and arms. In any case, whether poison oak surface rash, mosquito bites, or these deeper itching episodes, the easiest way to relieve such is not by some over the counter medicine or ointment, but rather using heat on affected areas because doing such releases normal cellular cytokine proteins that actually cause itching. Surface irritants like poison oak (or ivy) cause certain types of cytokines in skin cells to release that break apart tissue cell walls and increase extracellular fluid flows as a bodily repair process replacing damaged areas.

By taking a really hot shower on skin areas affected, those cytokines are released and then will take the body several hours to replenish. A more focused method is to use a hair drier on as high heat as one can briefly stand. One needs to endure brief intense itching as the heat releases the cytokines.

Oh yes, common age related issues, primarily due to decrease in collagen in the body. My tactile sensations have changed noticeably, I'm guessing as my skin has changed the nerves near the surface are reporting the sense of touch differently to the brain.
I used to only prefer all cotton shirts, now I much prefer polyester, a fabric I used to hate when I was younger.

Skin-wise, after reduced folliculitis, I'm now stuck with both eczema and psoriasis. So my skin is constantly itching. Although, changing to Fairy Liquid for dishwashing and laundry detergent plus delicate/sensitive clothes conditioner, it's much better.

For head problems which have come back, we're now using an amazing Coconut Shampoo from Aldi's plus Garnier Honey Shampoo. However the Aldi's gives us 6 days of clean hair before the oily bits come back...

Is it possible it’s the water in your home?

Otherwise, I’d check with doctor as he might suggest the cause is internal. Maybe a medication that’s interacting differently with a food or vitamin.

I feel your desperation.

Yes, I have all kinds of issues. Some of it I blame on moving to well water after being on chlorinated "city" water all my life, but I do think we become more sensitive. A face product I used for years now causes my face to become irritated and red. The incision where I had surgery on my neck is now developing a bump that seems to be growing. I never had a problem with surgeries before. My hair is breaking, oh yes, I sound like a mess. I do think most of it is due to aging.
